Moor / Demekin Fish - Bloodshot Eye

Hi everyone,

Please be patient with me as this is my first post on Kokos. I just discovered this forum over the weekend; hopefully my next posts will be on a lighter note!

I have a ~5 year old Demekin. Her water was changed last week on Tuesday.

The next day in the late evening I noticed her eye was a tiny bit red. I thought maybe it was a blood vessel that popped, so I waited until the next morning to discover it bloodshot.

The first 2 days I put in 2 tablespoons of aquarium salt in her tank each day (4 in total).

The third day (Friday) I decided to add some Maracyn Plus because I really started to worry. She has had 2 doses so far (one on Friday & one yesterday).

Her eye is still ruby red and it has not changed since then. She can still see with her red eye; she reacts when I put a flashlight near her eye etc. She seems happy and it doesn't really seem to be bothering her. Her dorsal is up, and she is very active. Her appetite is most definitely there!

Her tank only has marbles & her air stone (plus the filter arms that drop into the water). So I am reluctant to think her bloodshot eye is caused by an injury, though I don't know. There is only info out there for cotton eye, but nothing for red eye.

I filled out the Q&A below, these were the results a day after her water change. I can redo them today if needed... Any help would be appreciated! Thank you! :)

Miss X

Hello there! I am very sorry your fish is a little under the weather here. I have very little experience with eye issues so I can't be much help, but until someone else stops by, I wanted to send healing vibes to your girl! She is so cute :)

(Also, thank you SO much for answering the questions at the top of the page and providing pictures. That will help tremendously :) )

Aw...what a beautiful fish! :)

I'm sorry she's hurt. From what I can see. I am more inclined to think that it's some sort of physical trauma that resulted in damaged vessels and subsequent bleeding in the eye. It looks to me as though the bleeding had stopped long ago. I am not certain if the Maracyn Plus was necessary. However, since you've started, definitely finish the course. Maracyn Plus is a good choice in this case, though. The blood in the eye will take a little bit of time to be cleared, but it will. The only thing you will need to consider is to make sure you keep the water pristine so as to avoid infections. Stepping up on the water changes is always a good idea during these times. :)

Is the swelling in the eye something new and concomittant with the bloody eye?

@ horserider36 Thank you. She very much appreciates your positive vibes & kind words!

@ DNALAX Thanks for the response yesterday! I feel assured to know this is not an (obvious) sign of something else, nor how long a fishy "black eye" can take to heal. Speaking of black eye, her eye is now turning a bit more darker brown colour from bright red. Though I assume it's like when we get a bruise or black eye, it changes a bit in colour as it heals. All the blood is only in the clear part of her eyeball. The rest of her eye (the orange "eyelid" part) is perfect. No swelling or cuts etc.

She still seems to be doing fine and I gave her the last dose of Maracyn this morning. I'm going to do a water change tomorrow because today was her last dose of medicine, and I don't want to mess up the dose just incase. I will post a photo update of her eye later when I have a chance.

Fingers crossed!

Thanks again guys! :)

Sounds good! :)

As you probably saw from your water parameter report, your cycle may have been broken due to the Maracyn Plus treatment, because nitrites can be detected. Would you please do another test tomorrow before you do your water change and see where everything is? It may be that you will need to a lot of frequent water changes in the near future while your cycle re-stabilizes. We'll know more tomorrow :)
