rayray&bub 0 Posted April 24, 2012 I'm new to this site and literally have no clue what I'm doing so I really hope this works... I have my 2 goldfish in a 55 gallon tank. One of them, I'm pretty sure is a fantail and the other remains a mystery. Anyway, I have had both of them for a little over 1 year. The past couple of months they have had their dorsal fins down and don't seem to swim as much. The fantail sometimes does this "flapping" thing with his fins. Basically, he moves it up and down rapidly. It looks like he's trying to fly. My other fish occasionally does this too. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO? WATER CHEMISTRY: pH- 7.0 Ammonia- 0 Nitrites- 0 Nitrates- about 5-ish

ashlee18 1,169 Posted April 24, 2012 What filters are on the tank? It appears to have a fast current. The calico appears to have a slight floating issue. What food do you feed and how do you prepare it? Do you feed peas at all?

dodge245 3 Posted April 24, 2012 (edited) First off i just want to say well done, you've done really well so far 2 fish in a 55gallon and good water parameters, the HOB should be fine for current, the guys here will be able to help you out better if you answer these questions: Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level * Nitrite Level * Nitrate level * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? * Water temperature? * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? * How often do you change the water and how much? * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? * How many fish in the tank and their size? * What kind of water additives or conditioners? * What do you feed your fish and how often? * Any new fish added to the tank? * Any medications added to the tank? * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? its really important to know if there's been any other medications used in the tank and your water change schedule, just fill them out the best you can, floaty issues can normally be solved feeding peas and starving the fish for a few days (although i would wait for the others to chime in first), more experienced members will be able to give you better advice, and help you along.
