Hmmm...boils? Pimples?

Recommended Posts

I've been absent for a while. Everything has been fine until a couple of days ago I noticed Buttercup has several (and I mean 5 or 6) pimple-like bumps on both sides of his body. He's still eating and is active, but these pustules are just nasty! He's been quarantined in a 5 gallon (it was my only option) with borrowed filter media and wc's every other day. I've added aquarium salt.

Hospital Tank:

Amm-0

NitrItes-0

NitrItes-0

pH-7.5

Main Tank:

Amm-0

NitrAtes-5

NitrItes-0

pH-7.5

All other fish are healthy and have no signs of pimples. Buttercup, however, is a little weaker than the others. He has floating issues. I read in another thread that this may be a virus and it attacks fish with weaker immune systems, and the others may be unaffected. There's no bleeding, just puss when they pop. It's kinda gross.

Whitney, is buttercup a pearlscale?

Do you have a heater for the small tank?

No, he's an oranda. Yes, I do have a heater. Will it help pop the pimples?

I really hope it's not bacterial. They come to a head and pop, then smooth over like they were never there. I havent seen the ones that have popped come back so hopefully they'll all pop and never come back. :)

They sound like bacterial cysts. Do you have metro-meds?

I would do water changes in the hospital tank much more frequently if I were you. I agree that they look bacterial, so every time one pops it's releasing more bacteria into the water.

yes, i agree, they are bacterial cysts... rocky has them from time to time and is currently in QT with them now.. i believe your fish doesn't know it's sick? rocky never does.. so, flagyl & salt is the best for either hurrying up the bursting of them or reabsorbtion wc normal for now.. in a 5 gallon, i recommend 2 x 60% weekly wc's.. 70% daily wc when burst. keep salt level at 1% before any bursting.. then once burst gradually up to 3%

pristine water required. you will need to do daily wc's and replenish meds + salt with every wc.. it's time consuming, but it works..

Thanks! I don't know how easily I can get medication, but I'll make sure the watert is clean and there is salt in it. No, Buttercup doesn't realize he's sick. He's enjoying his "vacation" in a tank by himself. :) Once the cysts go away, will they come back? How did he get them in the first place?

yes, rocky enjoys his vacations too.. yes, they come back.. rocky is a stunted 5 year old calico fantail.. i blame my poor fish keeping skills (prior to koko's ofcourse).. in the past 12 months, rocky has had 3 relapses to cysts.. but all 3 times, he dosn't know that he's sick.. i refuse to believe that rockys are bacterial... however, that's just me being stubborn.. it is known that most cysts are bacterial. there could have been problems with water quality where he was before you purchased him or, you may have had something in the tank that never seemed to pose a bacterial problem before.. could have been even a rotting plant root, these we don't often see... chances are.. if you have something in your tank other than fish & water, bacteria has a home ;)

the cysts on your fish do not look like they have burst. keep up with daily wc's try for 2 per day as he's in such small quarters.. and don't forget salt..

i am currently investigating as to wether these cysts will go away without the need for meds.. rocky has been in qt for about a week now with them and i have not added meds or salt as yet.. waiting... if by next week nothing happens, i will add salt & give it another week..

perhaps these can go away without meds? never tried before and am curious to learn.. so, seeing as he's not bothered by them and they do not appear life threatening, i am not in a hurry to medicate..

you may draw your own conclusion.. i don't think you need to dash out & get the meds in a hurry.. the situation does not call for speedy actions.. so a few days is fine.

No, I don't think I will get meds just yet. They seem to be going away on their own. The bigger ones are taking a while to come to a head, but he seems unaffected. I hope they don't come back. What a pain that would be! So, it's just a recurring thing he'll have to live with for the rest of his life? Ugh.

I have no live plants in the tank, so where did it come from? My other fish are fine.

well, the biggest cyst on rocky has just burst., i have observed rocky closer and have seen more cysts.. now, i don't know if that is because i chose to not use the meds, but they were certainly not there before, that i could see.. i have decided to go with the meds in rocky's case.. and have already administered.. so atm, i have used 1 x 400mg metronidazole tablet, crushed and dissolved in some warmed tank water and have salt at .1% because the cyst has burst and he now has a wound..

if you can get your hands on some tablets, as you have your fish in a 5gallon, you will only need half tablet per dose. i would send you some, but i am afraid i might be penalized by australian/your customs :(

i can try though.. would you like to PM me your postal address?

so, now i leave it upto your better judgement for your fish..

i don't know after this if your fish will have a reoccurance.. i guess it will be a wait & see situation.

Aww, thanks for the offer! I'll hold off and just watch right now. In fact, I have some Maracyn 2 but I don't know if it is for what Buttercup has. I'll have to read the package. His large cyst is going to pop any time now, and I see a sore beginning to form. :( When I get home from work I'll check on him. Thanks for your help, Stakos! It's really appreciated. I'm glad I'm not the only one going through this. :)

Bad news. Buttercup took a turn for the worst. He dropsied almost over night. And his cysts weren't getting any better. I did a complete waterchange and added epsom salt, but it didn't do any good. I knew I wouldnt get money in time to buy an meds for him, so I chose to put him down. He would have been too far gone by the time payday came around to save him. So before he could suffer any more I used the last of my clove oil. It was a fairly quick death. RIP, Buttercup. Swim free!
