I just got this email today from Drs. Foster and Smith regarding my Marineland Stealth PRO heater. I've heard rumors about big problems with these heaters, but now it seems that the company is acknowledging these problems and attempting to make things right. :)

February 15, 2011

Dear JENNIFER,

We're contacting you with important news about your Marineland Stealth PRO Heater. Marineland is investigating quality issues involving the Stealth PRO Submersible Heater line, and out of an abundance of caution, they have stopped selling 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 watt models. If you have questions about this stop sale or to return these heaters under your Marineland warrantees, please call Marineland Customer Service at 800-338-4896.

Please stop using it immediately and take the following steps:

1. Unplug the heater from the wall to stop the flow of electricity

2. Let the heater cool for 15 minutes

3. Remove the heater from the tank

As a valued customer, your satisfaction is our priority and we would like to offer a replacement or refund for the heater you purchased from us.

Our team of Aquatic Specialists recommends the Marineland Visi-Therm Heaters or Fluval M Submersible Heaters as appropriate substitutes

Please contact Foster & Smith Aquatics Customer Service at 1-800-443-1160 at your earliest convenience to arrange the proper return and exchange/refund of your Marineland Stealth PRO Submersible Heater.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Please let us help you continue to enjoy your favorite hobby for many years to come!

Sincerely,

Customer Care Team,

Foster and Smith Aquatics

Not true Spillie, my Fluvals have been fully submersed for about 6 months. It is just bad marking on Fluval's part

This is the shiny reflective one-- maybe you have a different version? I bought the M and returned it as marked on the tube near the top was a water line--(and the pic on the pack of that particular one also shows the top out of the water.) From the product description:

"The Fluval M Series Submersible Heater is a welcomed departure from bulky unsightly heaters. This beautifully-designed submersible aquarium heater features a reflective shock-resistant borosilicate glass tube that houses superior components including a computer calibrated thermostat-all backed by a 16 point quality assurance program. Easy-to-adjust temperature control dial allows temperature settings between 66-86 degree Fahrenheit. Elegant, slim-profile heater occupies less space and unique mirror-like surface reflects surrounding colors to blend harmoniously into the aquarium environment. The Fluval M Series Submersible Heater is safe for fresh and saltwater aquariums. Submersible to water line on heater. Model Length Max. Aquarium Size Max. Depth 50W 11" 15 gallons 8" 100W 11" 30 gallons 8" 150W 13" 45 gallons 10" 200W 13" 65 gallons 10" 300W 15" 80 gallons 12" Please click on "More Information" for fearures and general information. "

I only mention it as it was surprise to me and I would have submersed it without thinking had I not happened to notice the water line on the tube.:o

That's the same one I have. I noticed the line a couple weeks ago and went, eh lol

I don't understand why they say submersible when you can't fully submerge it.

My thoughts exactly. It is a shame, as it is a really attractive heater--but won't work in my acrylic tank w/overflow--water level is too high. The heater top is sealed, I am sure, so no idea why you can't submerse it, but that's what it says. Yikes! I have one of these heaters in my goldie tank!!! :(

I'll have to take it out this evening....that means I have to buy a new one. I think I'll go back to Aquaclear, I've never had an issue with those.

I stopped using these heaters in my show tanks awhile ago. I lost my favorite fish to a malfunctioning Stealth.

Thanks for the heads up, Jennifer. I am passing this around. :)

O Also, I have heard that the original Stealth line is also on recall. And that Pet*Smart will replace your heaters even without a receipt, no questions asked. But I would call your local PS just to make sure. :)

I found another letter online that lists ones that are not to be used and ones that are OK to use (see below).

Unfortunately, I have the ETP 100 on my QT tank this very moment...so went out and bought an aqueon heater to replace it on my way home from work. I did write to the company last night to see if it was dangerous, but no answer yet. Since I am going away tomorrow, I decided to get a new one to be on the safe side...

I got an email from Dr. Foster And Smith about this... What a PAIN IN THE BUTT! ALL of my heaters are Stealth.. Every single one of them!!!!!!! (Nope I was wrong. I checked. 2 of them aren't!) Im not sure where I have reciepts or anything at this point either...

I have to check everything out and see which ones are affected because I do have some that are the old verision which is good. And I have some that are 75watt or less so those should be okay... UGH

Okay its not as bad as I thought. Only two of my heaters appear to be affected.. I have a lot of the old models with the red knob (these are okay we have decided right?) and then I have one thats a 25watt and supposedly not on the list. I only have two that are on the list , a 150watt and a 100watt. I already called Dr. Foster and they are going to give me a refund for the 150watt. The 100watt I bought at Petsmart like a month ago so I have to go see if I can find that reciept.!

Found it!! :) Headed to the store now!

Back from store now! (Love using the Edit button hehe)...

They exchanged my heater. (looked at me funny though and kept saying how I waited SOOO long to return it.. Umm the purchase date was only one month ago?) I ended up getting the Aqueon Pro. It's almost identical to the Stealth (which, until now, I was very very happy with!)... It cost a bit more though...

So now the heaters I have left are either Stealth 75watt or below (which are okay it seems?) or Theo Hydor. However I have ONE 100watt Stealth that I bought about 2 years ago with the red knob... Do I leave it be or switch it out? I don't think anyone would refund it at this point. I don't even know where I would have bought it...

I feel like I wanted to be safe with the two newer ones. Since i bought one last month, and bought the other in November. But the one that is 2 years old.. I feel like.. isn't it PROBABLY okay i its been fine all this time? I dunno. Maybe I will get a replacement when I have some extra cash..which is never! LMAO
