hi i'm shug. i recently got a telescope goldfish for my birthday and the last goldfish i had was when i was about ten and i killed it within two weeks by overfeeding it. i'm completely petrified i'm going to kill this one too but i figured if i got guidance from experienced goldfish owners he might have a chance to survive. looking forward to becoming an experienced goldfish mommy.

Welcome to Kokos! :)

Here's some basic information for you

1. Fancy goldfish need 20 gallons for the first fish and 10 for each additional one for them to grow properly and healthily.

2. The tank should be cycled. Read up on the cycling of the tank here . If you put the fish in the tank without cycling it you need to do daily water changes to keep the ammonia down.

3. Goldfish MUST have adequate filtration. This is 10x filtration per hour. For example if you have a 20 gallon tank, you need a filter that turns over 200 gallons of water per hour or more.

4. Goldfish MUST have weekly water changes of 50-75% or more. You CANNOT skip out on this

5. Goldfish need to be fed a variety of food and not flake foods, they make your fish float and have no nutritional value. A good staple SINKING pellet diet is very important as well as bloodworms, shrimp, and perhaps peas weekly to clear out their system.

6. It's optimal to go for a barebottom tank if you are just starting out. If you do have gravel it must be under 1 inch and must be graveled often.

7. No hollow ornaments either. They collect stagnant water where anaerobic bacteria build up and will kill your fish.

Goldfish are very longterm commitments and very expensive to care for especially with water and food. :D If you're still up to the challenge congratulations! We are here to help you through it all. :) Welcome to Kokos.
