tarynator 0 Posted December 4, 2010 (edited) Okay so last night I come home only to find Mr Poh COMPLETELY belly-up. It scared me SO much because my initial thought was that he was a goner... but turns out he was just being typically floaty (if anyone remembers my last post). I'm starting to get frustrated about this, I'm not sure what his problem is. Otherwise he seems very healthy. First time he went completely belly-up though. I've been soaking their food and haven't had as many problems except for last night. It was around midnight when I got home so there was little I could do about it at the time... and now this morning he's completely normal. Is this something I should be worrying about because I really hate seeing him so floaty even if it doesn't last more than 24 hours. Does he just have a faulty swim bladder or something?! Or... you know what... I'm starting to wonder if it has something to do with the bubble wall I put in last month... though, I never see him in it, but how knows what happens when I'm gone?! Cynders 0 Posted December 4, 2010 Does he gulp the bubbles at all or play in them? What are you feeding him?
tarynator 0 Posted December 4, 2010 I've never seen him really interact with the bubble wall at all when I'm around. Sometimes I wonder if any of them realise it's there lol. But I can't say what happens for when I'm not around. Right now I'm feeding Nutrafin Max flakes and occasional bloodworms as treats. I've been looking for pellets to no avail at the local pet stores
Cynders 0 Posted December 4, 2010 I think it's probably the flakes then. Have you tried Big Al's? It's a canadian based store. They have lots of good food and all the fish supplies you could ever want.
bodoba 2,980 Posted December 4, 2010 How often do you fast with peas? If it's a reoccuring issue then perhaps it's related to constipation?
tarynator 0 Posted December 4, 2010 I haven't checked Big Al's, the closest one to me is over an hour away. I'll try to check this weekend. I've fasted them, but not with peas. It's usually for two days (Saturday and Sunday) but that's always been a regular thing. If I see Poh being floaty thru the week, I fast them for a day. Makes me feel bad for Bil though, he's an eating machine! lol It is pretty frequent, but this is the first time it's happened with the soaked food. He's a bad surface gulper, but it was never to the point of going belly-up.
Cynders 0 Posted December 4, 2010 Oh sorry I need to make a correction, Big Al's is located in the U.S. but they ship to Canada. You're much better off ordering online than going to the store. Yes, try peas this time, it clears out their system and any air in there.
blackteles 99 Posted December 4, 2010 I would make sure to feed them frozen peas to help purge their system for a day and then fast for another full day. Also definitely try Big Al's to locate sinking pellets for goldfish. (I use omega One medium pellets for one). Hope everything works out soon!
Captain Findus Goldfish 272 Posted December 4, 2010 As Tay said, the pellets will really help. Otherwise boiled spinach, carrots, courgettes, peas etc are all good foods for floaty fish
number20121 2,663 Posted December 4, 2010 I know it is a long drive, but if I was you I would just drive to Big Al's on a day off, with some money in my wallet, and see what all I need and can get. The pellet food will last for a good long while so it is not that you have to drive there every other weekend to get some food. It's more like a twice or once a year thing. And as said, you could also pick up some other stuff you need for your fish and tank. Also, try the peas. I got only one fish that tends to get floaty occasionally. The last time Vanille was REALLY floaty, so I fasted her one day and fed peas the next day, and she hasn't been floaty ever since. I stay on that once a week fasting followed by peas day schedule and it really improved her condition!

Hi, I'm waiting for amazon to deliver some Hakari pelets myself and I picked up some Omega One medium pellets for my floaty boys. I soaked them for about 30 min and feed 18 pelletts to 6 goldfish rainging from 3-4.5 inches not including tails. Is that to much cause it's still making them floaty. How much should I be feeding them?
tarynator 0 Posted December 16, 2010 Hey guys, I tried the peas and it worked for a day but now he seems to be getting worse and I'm not sure what to do anymore. He's going completely floaty almost every time he eats, even after soaking the food I'm at a loss right now. So basically I've been feeding every other day to give him time to digest and become neutral again. I've noticed his poop has air bubbles and floats, but even with sinking the food... so obviously he's still taking in air. What do I do?
tarynator 0 Posted December 17, 2010 JFLD:JFLDJFADFD!! I FOUND OMEGA PELLETS! Finally! I bought the small sized pellets just in case he has a digesting troubles, Bil will just have to suffer with tiny food. I fed today with soaked flakes since it's all I had, I'll be home later tonight and I had a stern word saying I'd be very mad if I came home and he was floaty again, lol. Also, tomorrow I'll be leaving for ~about~ a week and I'm hoping everything will be fine. I bought a slow-release feeder and am thinking about putting two in there. They release pellets so crossing my fingers it doesn't leave a mess... any thoughts on this??
nicoleauryn 46 Posted December 17, 2010 As Tay said, the pellets will really help. Otherwise boiled spinach, carrots, courgettes, peas etc are all good foods for floaty fish I dampen a few spinach leaves under the facet and then stick in the microwave for about 10 seconds (if that). That makes it limp and then I put the leaves in the veggie clip. I have noticed that spinach, peas, and cucumber have all helped my floaty fish - even with soaking the pellets. I avoid anything that floats these days.
nicoleauryn 46 Posted December 17, 2010 Not sure on the slow release, I haven't used them before with my goldfish. I'll let a mod or someone answer that.
Jennie 1 Posted December 18, 2010 (edited) I have an automatic feeder and I recently used it for a week, and it worked just fine. The water was good and the fish were noticeably larger. What I did was to fill it (I used Omega One small pellets) about a third of the way. Then I adjusted the feeding spoon, sat the feeder on a paper plate, and gently clicked the wheel around to see how much it dispensed at a time, and made adjustments that way to get the proper amount for a feeding (I think I had it almost completely closed at the end!). Make sure you put a fresh battery in it. Anyway, it worked very well for me...although I still worried the whole time I was gone! ETA: Whoops! I read that as automatic feeder, not slow-release. I don't like the idea of slow release feeders, myself, but YMMV. Edited December 18, 2010 by Jennie
