Regular Member Cynders Posted November 27, 2010 Regular Member Share Posted November 27, 2010 (edited) Well she could have scratched herself. What are your water parameters and are there any ornaments in the tank? Is she bloated and are her scales sticking out? Regular Member Nomi Posted November 27, 2010 Regular Member Share Posted November 27, 2010 I'm pretty sure all goldfish can lose scales (like Haruka said, they can scratch them off if they get caught in an ornament). My ranchu somehow managed to lose a scale not all that long ago. Just make sure that the water quality is pristine to avoid infections, namely that your ammonia and nitrite readings are 0, and your nitrates are under 40pmm. So make sure to keep up with your water changes. If you're worried about it, you could use a bit of salt to deter bacteria.

Oh and she is not bloated. Water parameters = your water quality like Nomi said. Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Again like she said you want your water as clean as possible, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 0-20 nitrate if your tank is cycled. Is your tank cycled? How often do you clean under the hollow ornament?

Supporter Helen Posted November 28, 2010 Supporter Share Posted November 28, 2010 my fish lose scales from time to time.. it's not unnatural or abnormal.. some grow back and some don't.. but just like the other members have said, pristine water and your fish should be fine.
