Puka Shells?

I've been unable to find a small amount of crushed coral to buy locally to buffer my tank. I went to the big box pet store today to pick up some natural gravel for our betta and asked the manager about crushed coral. She suggested using the puka shells (used for hermit crabs). She instructed me to use it just like crushed coral by putting a small handful in a stocking bag, tie it up and drop it in.

Anyone use this method before with success? It appears to have coral bits as well as small sea shells.

TIA!
