Mystery ...balls?

OK, this is strange. I did a water change/cleaned my tank today and found a number of (like 40-50) small, hard, black balls in the bottom of the tank They look just like poppy seeds, but a wee bit bigger and blacker. Seem to be perfectly round, and I cannot crush them with my fingers. I have never had plants in this tank, no new fish since May, no new equipment. The only change I made was I added PhosPure ( to help control that brown algae) about 8 weeks ago, but the PhosPure is brownish-red in any case. What on earth could this be? It guess it had to either come in my tap water or from a fish--but cannot for the life of imagine what it is. I have never seen these in my tap water, btw ... but what could be coming from a fish? Is this some weird parasite? Dried up eggs? I am very perplexed. The fish show no interest in eating them, btw.

My attempt at photographing these tiny things. Here is tow pics of them in the tank (next to the flattened glass marbles) and one of some of them in bucket of water from the top.

They are all at the end of the tank where the fish tend to hang out (near the beloved "Blendar Jar Hideaway".)

Ashlee! Mystery solved! Yes, I do have a glass thermometer-and low and behold, it is broken! Thank you!!

[Now I just have to figure out how to get them out of there and worry about where the broken glass went....]

Thanks for the help, everyone.

(can't believe I broke the thermometer. I'm "Spillie", not "Breakie" lol)
