I Want To Do This Full Time.

Recommended Posts

I've decided that I'm going to explore the idea of opening my own store. I think it would be awesome to own a store the specialized in goldfish, mostly fancies.

I currently have three years left on my contract with the navy. My plan is to fulfill that contract, get some further education toward business management. And do plenty of research into breeding.

I find far too few stores in my area, or in Canada for that matter, take goldfish seriously. They always seems as a bit of an afterthought for most store owners. The focus seems to be on tropical, and salt water fish. I'd like to offer people an alternative, with what I think is the most beautiful, entertaining, and easily kept fish in the world.

This is something I'm seriously considering. I've loved animals my whole life. I've always wanted to get into keeping fancy goldfish. One of the things that makes me the happiest about coming home, after a stressful day, besides being with my girl, is spending time on my tank, looking after my friends.

I'm not sure this will happen. But I'm excited about the possibility.

:krazy:

Fantastic idea! If you're planning to breed, would you ship to other provinces, like, say, Manitoba (hint hint) :D

I sooo envy you, that is if you end up doing it :)

People around here don't care so much about fish

Ha, that would be nice. I have a lot of work, research, and saving to do in preparation for this. I definitely want to take my time, be patient, and do it right.

But when I do get into breeding, and have some success, Kokos will be the first to know. :)

that would be cool actually but waht if, you do a store dedicated to fish, i.e... well an lfs, but then you got a big section dedicated to goldfish? that way i think you can get more customers in the sense that if they are just fish keepers looking for stuff, well they shall has it !

There are stores in town that focus mostly on salt water, and tropical fish. Like I said before, there seems to be a lack of respect for goldfish. I want to get into a niche market.

I do plan to sell accessories, tanks, filters, pumps, food, stands etc. But specialize in fancy goldfish. I also think I'll carry Koi, and Shebunkin, comets (single tailed). But I likely won't breed them.

I would love to run a goldfish shop too. But I think I'd be too tempted to keep them all and I wouldn't make any money! :rofl I figure if I want to work with fish, I better work with fish that I'm not interested in keeping myself. hehehe

that sounds like a great idea! there is only 1 specialized goldfish/koi place i know and its always worth a 40 minute drive but they are always sick! it would be great to see a fancy goldfish store that is owned by a guy that knows his stuff. best of luck locke.

That would be great to specialise in goldfish, cos you could give some real focused advice and teach the world how to keep goldfish properly! Out of people I know, most people would keep/have kept goldfish rather than tropicals because they are supposed to be low maintenance cos they don't need a heater etc. But the fish they get always die. You could show people like that how amazing goldfish are :)

I think it is a great idea! You need to find out where the profit is. I guess that would be in the supplies not the fish? I don't know:)

Ask somebody how much their rent is for the size and quality of building you are interested in and then how much money do you need to live on? Then try to calculate if you can sell enough aquariums and fish food to make that much money:) That's the hard part. You could also sell a couple of things like super-premium dog and cat food unless there is another store nearby. I know of a dog store that sells only Canidae dog food but everything else under the sun for dogs.

I think it would be cool to have a giant goldfish in the window (with proper conditions of course) Pick a store front that gets no direct sun:)

Most of our independent fish stores are in plain warehouse type buildings or strip centers.

Sure sounds great to me! Definitely open a website to reach the world and offer shipping to reach a much broader customer base. I think it's a good idea! ;)

I'll definitely be more focused on shipping within Canada. But if I can, I'll look into shipping outside the country as well. I just know I've talked to other breeders that have had trouble shipping across the border.

I may be biased here...IF you go through with this, maybe you should carry wakins and watonais. Hardly anyone seems to sell them. At least the purebred ones, apparently you can find them in the feeder tanks sometimes.

Other then that, I have no idea of the demand of fancy goldfish and I'll go ahead and wish you luck as others have.

You could create demand:) Get some interviews, TV, newspaper, magazines....get some great photos out there. Educate young kids on the fish bowl problem. :testkit:

Maybe set up an aquarium in a high school main hallway...or do maintenance businesses with aquariums...

Start keeping a file with a business plan and details. It sounds like fun to plan it even if you don't follow through with it.
