one of my regular customers happened to mention to me the other day, that he was setting up a marine tank. We got talking about it but then he showed me the size of the tank with his hands. I would say roughly he implied a tank of dimensions 35cm x 20cm x 20cm. It's my understanding that marine tanks actually need to be quite large; but he says this is what the guy at the fish shop has told him he should use. Is this true? I only ask because if it is true, I have more than enough room for a marine tank. ^_^

That would be a nano reef. It is possible and usually very pretty but it is extremely demanding to maintain. I know a lot of people who started very small nano's only to have them crash in the first few months. It is recommended to do a lot of research before attempting to start such a small reef tank. I researched for over a year before I started mine, and I chose to start with a 7 gallon nano. It's working out but it's a lot of work whereas my 29 gallon reef is a lot easier to maintain. :)

Please ask him to join a saltwater forum and do some serious reading...there's a very limited amount of things you can keep in a tank that small, very few fish/crustaceans as most grow too large, and corals have their own demands. The equipment and lighting is pretty expensive and specialist. Make sure he knows what he's getting himself in for before trying anything if you can...I've been keeping fish for over a year now and I still don't have the bottle or the money to start a marine tank, and certainly not a nano tank!!! Maybe suggest he gets a betta instead ;)

I have been raising fish for many years and when I set up my Nano tank I did alot of research before I did, I have to admit Nano tanks are hard, no room to mess up and things will die really fast if you do...:(
