Ranchu's some times dont have a Wen, It really depends on where there from. If your looking for a Show fish then yeah some of the judges will say they need a wen. then you get into the whole shape of it too.

So it may get a wen later or just be a wenless Ranchu. :)

Here's a good one from Daryl:

No - all fish that are genetically "Ranchu" or "Lionchu" or "Lionhead" do NOT get wens. The genetics as well as environmental issues affect wen development. It is very very common for Ranchu fry within a single spawn to have every type of wen development displayed - all the way from no wen to a heavy full-head type. So much depends on the genetic makeup of the parent fish.

If your fish is not displaying at least a rudimentary wen at about 1 inch of length, it nost likely will not develop much of a wen. What you have pictured there is what is commonly referec to as an "eggfish". (not technically correct - but it is a common usuage. A true EggFish has a different back presentation and tail finnage - but..... that is neither here nor there.).

Yes - all "Ranchu" have wens. It is the "definition" of the conformation of a "Ranchu". So.... yes - if it does not have a wen, it technically cannot be listed as a "Ranchu". With Ranchu genetics - though, it is simply a wenless RAnchu.

A wen-less Ranchu can still be a BEAUTIFUL fish. I have had them. I love them. I also like the "old fashioned Side View Ranchu - or "Potato".
