Goldfish and bettas are two different species.

Breeds is the difference between a doberman and a poodle.

Species is the difference between a dog and a cat.

Uhhhh.... i don't think that you can really buy a black Comet (I'm not very sure so don't take my word 4 it)... i only think that u have to breed a black moor and comet at home.

Yes, you can. They are rare, but they do pop up every now and again. Rarer still is the midnight (black) shubunkin but they still can be obtained if one is persistent enough.

And all goldfish, from commons to ranchus, are close enough genetically to interbreed and produce fertile offspring. They are all the same species, carassius auratus. A betta cannot breed with a comet. They are simply way, way to far apart genetically. It would be like attempting to breed a rabbit and a monkey.

I think you are thinking of all fish as too closely related together. Fish are as genetically diverse, no, even more genetically diverse and have a more immense evolutionary background than mammals.

YAY! When I get my bigger tank the first new fish I'm gonna look for is that Black Comet! I think the pet shops here in florida are too...*bleh* to have rare fish like that anywhere...I went to Pet*Co this afternoon hoping to see some Black Moors but they were STILL under observation. The guy I usually talk to said that they keep getting sick/dieing/dead goldfish the previous time I went was two week before!! I dont think I'll ever be able to breek fishies so I'm counting on lady luck to help me find a BC. The Black Comet is second coolest goldfish I've ever seen!! For me the first is a Tosakin GF.

I have black comet but it's starting to turn orange. Black is not a stable color in goldfish. Even back moors often turn orange as they get bigger.

Don't think your going to get some strange cool goldfish by breeding a black moor with a comet. I've done it and all the fry were comets. The natural fish shape is the domanate gene and the fancy goldfish shapes are unstable genes. So the fry will all be the natural fish shape. Although the natural fish shaped fry will have some babies that have a fancy goldfish shape.

Fish genetics is complicated to explain. But this is the simple explaination.

I'm sure someone else could go into the genetics of goldfish in much more detail.
