Diatom Filters.

Hey, I just bought 2 new plants, and really want them to flourish in my tank. However, my tank has been overrun with diatoms (little organisms that cover everything in a brown sludge and block light from getting to plants, eventually killing them). I try with all my might to scrub them out of my aquarium, and it's started to work. The diatoms have been much less frequent. However, I would like to know if anyone has heard of/used a diatom filter. Does this remove diatoms from the water? If so where could I get one?

Diatom filters are particle filters utilizing "diatomaceous earth" as the filter medium (These are the silica exoskeletons of long-dead diatoms and they're composed of silica, so they're like a fine sand). They only remove suspended particulate matter in the water,so they're useful if you have a bloom of green water or murky water in the tap but they don't remove excess nitrogen, which is what causes the population explosion of living diatoms in your tank.
