Guest Megan Steele
Hey! Still cycling my tank. It has been at a solid 1.0ppm for about a week now. How much longer until the Nitrate kicks in? Until the Nitrite disappears??
Regular Member uberleslie Posted October 16, 2008 Regular Member Share Posted October 16, 2008 Nitrite can be high for a few days to several. Maybe about 10 generally? Seems everyone's cycle is a bit different. Are you doing a cycle with fish? If so, nitrite levels that high are very dangerous. (P.S. Maybe post in the Water forum...may get more feedback.)
Regular Member cometgirl Posted October 16, 2008 Regular Member Share Posted October 16, 2008 Nitrite usually takes a lot longer than ammonia to disappear. It can take weeks for those bacteria to build up. Don't give up! It will get there eventually. If you have fish in the tank, it's best to do daily water changes to keep the nitrite below about 0.5. Lots of nitrite damages the fishes gills, and can kill them quicker than high ammonia.
