How To Tell Male And Female

Hi! Telling the gender of a goldfish is difficult, even for seasoned goldfish keepers. Males will get breeding tubercles, or breeding stars (small white pimple-like bumps on the gill plate and front of pectoral fin) when they are ready to breed.

Also, males will have an 'innie' vent and females will have an 'outie', though this isn't always %100.

Hopefully someone with more goldfish experience can elaborate and add pictures.

As Nomi said, it is hard to tell, especially when they are small. Many people here have been surprise when their "Joe" turns out to be a "Josephine"! :D
