Plecos And Substrate

I have 2 common plecos in my tropical tank. My tropical tank started out as a teeny planted 10 gal. Me being naive about sterilizing live plants had a serious snail outbreak. I then came into possesion of a bigger tank. I had planned on moving the plants over and thus put fluorite in the bottom. However, my plants looked terrible and were covered in snails and I decided it was too much of a pain. My question is, do plecos have to have some form of substrate in the tank or can I just put some big rocks in it and make them hidey holes? I despise the fluorite and find that I'm terrible about cleaning the tank because of it and I'd rather just do away with it if the plecos don't need it. Thanks.

all i've got for my pleco in my molly tank is a large piece of driftwood...

he chillaxes upside down under the driftwood all morning and probably comes out at night.
