I can't answer you but I am curious about the response.. I have one platy and am planning on getting a few guppies. Right now the platy has a filter but no air stone or anything. I feel like someone said they don't like their water disturbed but I could be totally wrong, so I'll be watching this for an answer. And oh yeah. Welcome to koko's!!!!

The simple answer is no*, it's not necessary, but its definitely a plus. You can get small air pumps and hose for a little bit of nothing.

*That's dependent though on the assumption that you have a strong enough filter to sufficiently aerate the water.
