Some Questions About Alignment With Light

Recommended Posts

Ok so fish align themselves to the light, right?

So if the light is coming from the side, the fish will likely list to the side.

But what do fish do at night, when there is no light? Why are they not sideways or upside down?

Is it because in the absense of light, the fish just remains upright?

So a blind fish would have no trouble listing to the side, or anything of the sort, since he see's no light?

Or would a blind fish see just a bit of light?

You see, I have a blind fish, or mostly blind anyway. My Blackie, who is a black moor.

He has blue eyes, you can see a blue haze over his eyes. In pictures his blue eyes show up too. It's kind of neat, if he were not blind because of it.

Anyway I was watching him today, when he would swim to the surface, he would suddenly go to far and flip right over backwards!!

He seemed to have no trouble righting himself, but every time he got to the surface, he would flip.

I was wondering if that might have to do with him losing site of the light, or where the light was coming from when he got right to the surface.

What are your thoughts on this?

Hmmm so maybe they do not remain completely upright in the dark? Is the room with the tank totally dark, or is there another lamp, TV etc that would cause them to list to the side?

This is interesting.

when I noticed it...the desk lamp was on but no direct rays of light just a glow.

Or maybe when the door opened and light came in...

They always righted themselves shortly upon me putting on more light in the room or the tank light...

I thought they were just "half asleep."

I list to the side if you wake me up before I am ready too

Well, you could always try doing what you're supposed to be doing.

Instead of GOOFING AROUND ON THE INTERNET!

Could someone explain this to me. I've never heard of it before.

I don't really know much about it either, so I can't really explain it.

They do use light to align themselves. I had a light on the floor beside one of my bins while I was doing something, and the fish started leaning sideways toward the light.

Then I read in my notes that I printed off from the disease diagnosis website, that if your fish is listing to the side, the first thing you should do, is to check if the light is coming from the side.

That is all I know! I hope someone else will see this and explain it better.
