Guest Montman
Here are some pics of my pair of Bettas mating this morning. I'm not sure how successful they were. She ate about half the eggs. The male got the other half into the nest - I hope. He didn't have much of a nest - but I can see some eggs in it. Male draped over the female. See her round red tail sticking out on the left near the surface of the tank. Male draped over the female from another angle. Here you have a good look at her. When they were wrapped together, she was always on her back as seen here. A Betta kaleidoscope! Zoomed in on the previous picture. You can see her egg tube. (White dot.) Here you can see the male breaking away from her to catch the eggs she dropped. That is her head pointing slightly up and to the right. I think I should have yoke sacs with heads and tails in 3? days. I'll keep you posted. Edited July 27, 2008 by Montman

Regular Member CountryLovah Posted July 28, 2008 Regular Member Share Posted July 28, 2008 These pictures are soo interesting!!! (Cover your eyes little ones haha)! It's good timing too because I went to the beach a few days ago and took a betta book with me for my reading material. It had a lot of information on breeding and I had no knowledge at all before reading that book. It was so interesting to read, but there were no pictures and now to see.. So interesting!! Thanks for sharing!

Guest Montman
I bought the male about 2 weeks ago and the female about 3 days after that. I went to the Betta section here and found a link that was very helpful. The first time I put them together she got pretty stressed out and roughed up. All her fins had splits in them - so I moved her to another tank - and was surprised that her fins mended in a few days. I kept her bowl next to his so they could she each other. After about a week I but her back in his tank - but with a "hurricane glass" separating them. Yesterday evening I lifted the glass and freed her. This morning they were mating. After they were through, he started trying to drive her away - so I dropped the glass over her again. Right now they act like they want to mate again.

Guest Montman
interesting ..you take such nice pics Thanks, Hi-d I got lucky with that last picture where the male is reaching out for those eggs as they were sinking - while he was just letting go of the female. Maybe I should name them - instead of calling them the male and female. I usually only name GF. Romeo and Juliette? Guenevere and Lancelot?

Guest Montman
Well, everything was going fine. The fry "hatched" in 2 days! They kept falling out of the bubble nest - but the male would pick them up and put them back. He did this for 3 days - at which time I was going to remove him from the tank, but he was taking such good care of them I left him in. The next day all the fry were gone - he must have eaten them. So, I'm going to mate them again this weekend and this time remove the male sooner.

Regular Member bettaqueen Posted August 7, 2008 Regular Member Share Posted August 7, 2008 wow sorry that happened to you. sometimes you have to pull the male if you notice them eating the eggs. Some males do that. I have had breeder freinds who have had another male who had eggs at the same time and they have snuck the other egg eaters eggs in with theirs and it works out. I hope it turns out better next time. Oh and get lots of jars ready. Bettas can have 100 plus in their spawns
