Don't flush your goldfish, and you might just save a carp's life.

According to Jeremy Holden, a fisheries biologist with the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, the introduction of goldfish into two Southern Ontario lakes could be behind this past weekend's mysterious die-off of thousands of carp.

"Anytime you can send that message, it's a good one (to send)," said Holden. "Releasing non-native species into our native waters can have serious and everlasting consequences."

Hundreds of carp carcasses have been washing up on the shorelines of Lake Simcoe near Barrie and Rice Lake south of Peterborough.
