I keep crushed oyster shells in one, to up my KH, I'm hoping this will help. I also have snails, and I heard that they can help with their shells. It comes in one bundle so to speak and you just tear off how much you want at a time to fit in your filter. it can be rinsed, but once it gets too dirty then you can add new.
