Sponge Filters..

It really does not matter. The larger diameter takes up more water volume - the smaller has less platform for BB. I often carve off 2 sides so that it will sit flat up against the glass for larger fry. For little guys, it is better to have it sitting in the middle of thet ank. They have a way of getting themselves jammed between the sponge and the glass, otherwise, and dying. Poor little things.

You can stack 'em. Cut 'em. Jam them over the intake of a regular filter. They are very versitile and quite cheap.
