Regular Member gel Posted February 15, 2007 Regular Member Share Posted February 15, 2007 My fantail is alone in a 10us gal QT. It swims around looking for food or hiding amongst the Anachris plants. When I put my Common in there, the water gets toxic & lots of green algae, even with 25% water changes. I might put it in the 90L rubbermaid along with the other fish soon. I'm still building my stand & cleaning my new 85gal tank.
Regular Member daryl Posted February 15, 2007 Regular Member Share Posted February 15, 2007 I am sorry that your little fish has to be in QT. I can assure you, though, that the little fantail is much happier in good water, even alone, than it would be in poor water even by itself. Even though goldfish are very gregarious, they do fine by themselves, too. A common rarely can stay in a 10 gallon tank and be fed. It is too big and messy a fish to successfully live in such a small volume. I have found that often when I am forced to keep a larger fish in a small volume of water such as a 10 gallon tank, it is far easier to feed a bit less, and be aggressive about the water changes. I go for 50-75% on regular changes - and the little cleanups are the 25percenters.... There are a few circumstances where smaller volume in a water change is recommended, but for most, larger works better. If you cannot do more than 25% at a time, do it every other day or every day if needed. Your new 85 gallon sounds great! I look forward to pics of your stand and setup! Regular Member gel Posted February 16, 2007 Author Regular Member Share Posted February 16, 2007 I use a turkey baster to clean up the poop & 25% water changes every 9 days. I?m thinking about a digi-cam. Don?t know how much they cost. But I don?t want to spend $250 cause I spend too much. My budget is bust. Bad thing about big tanks is you can?t move them by yourself. But the thing is a work of art! I could charge admission once I get it set up & stocked The LFS really has a lot of ugly koi. Not worth buying
