Why So Acidic?

Hey,

Lately my tank has been getting VERY acidic.

Each week i have to add bicarbonate soda just to keep the tank @ pH 7.

My fish are sadly usually sitting in a pH 5 tank and some of their tails were getting "burnt off" (but once i add bicarb soda they turn better)

i do have a full kit, but most of the tests are fairly confusing / unaccurate

ANy idea why it is so acidic? is it from hardness etc, or is it their waste, or anything else?

What is the PH of your tap water?

Any other stats would be very useful too. If the tap water PH is fine then I might reccomend more frequent or larger water changes.

How often/how large are your water changes?

How many fish/what size tank/filtration?

You should test the kH & gH of your water (both tank & tap), these will determine how well your water buffers or holds a particular pH.

The higher the numbers the better your pH will hold.

Is this something that has happened only recently? Have you added anything new to the tank? Done anything different with it?

How many fish are in what size tank, Nick? The more fish are producing waste in a crowded space, the sooner the pH will drop. That is another possibility to consider. :)
