Regular Member 88keys Posted November 1, 2006 Regular Member Share Posted November 1, 2006 Can aquarium salt (added to goldfish tank) hurt my apple snails? I usually just drop the salt in and it sinks to the bottom where the snails sit. Is this okay?
Regular Member nichjake Posted November 1, 2006 Regular Member Share Posted November 1, 2006 Salt is not good for applesnails. The same principle goes with apples as it does for slugs.....salt is a no no. They can be made to tolerate low concentrations, some better than others, but its not good for them. Regular Member 88keys Posted November 1, 2006 Author Regular Member Share Posted November 1, 2006 I keep the snails in the goldfish tank and I always add salt with water changes (I thought that's what I'm supposed to do???Good for the fish, right? ) HMMMM???? What should I do?
Regular Member 88keys Posted November 1, 2006 Author Regular Member Share Posted November 1, 2006 So either keep them in separate tanks OR stop using salt? Which is best?
Regular Member froggydella Posted November 1, 2006 Regular Member Share Posted November 1, 2006 If your going to salt the tank, Remove the snail's first and put them into a container of some sort while your salting. That way they are safe and sound.
Regular Member 88keys Posted November 1, 2006 Author Regular Member Share Posted November 1, 2006 Great idea! So would an hour be long enough to wait before adding the snails back to the tank???
Regular Member froggydella Posted November 1, 2006 Regular Member Share Posted November 1, 2006 Hmm, I am going to say no, I don't think 1 Hour will give adequte time for the salt to leave the tank. Why are you salting your tank?
Regular Member Devs Posted November 1, 2006 Regular Member Share Posted November 1, 2006 Once you add salt to your tank, the only way that you can remove it is by water changes,so it's very important to know huch much is always added into your tank ,and what the final concentration is. Salt should Never just "be added to your tank .If fish come in direct contact with salt,it could burn them. You should Always dissolve the salt into a little bit of tank water Before adding it to your tank. I personally don't keep salt in my tank at all times. If you think about it,Goldfish are freshwater fish. I leave the salt for new fish and q-tanks,or a certain illness, problem or Parasite that my fish may be facing. As for the snails,I don't keep them in salted tanks.Although I have heard that some people keep their snails in a low % (O,1%),and say that they do fine,I am not willing to risk their health because of it. One more thing,to wait an hour before adding the snails back to the tank is not recommended. As I mentioned, salt doesn NOT evaporate and therefore will remain in the tank. Regular Member 88keys Posted November 1, 2006 Author Regular Member Share Posted November 1, 2006 Well I add aquarium salt every time I do water change, cause that's what pet store told me to do to keep goldfish happy and healthy - lower stress....oh dear!
