How Long Can My Filters Be Turned Off

I'm still battling this second cycle I have going on, and it occurred to me to wonder if perhaps I'm 'killing' whatever amount of good bacteria I have growing when I do my water changes.

I've been doing 50% and 100% water changes for almost 2 weeks now, and my filters are turned off for anywhere from 30 - 45 or maybe even longer. Is that length of time harmful to the good bacteria? Is that contributing to the cycle problem I'm having, perhaps?

No. and hour or so either way should not harm your cycle in any way. You can bag up the media in bags and leave it, with oxygen and a touch of ammonia in a bag for shipment - a day or three - and still have a nice viable platform of bacteria.

Your cycle should be fine during cleaning.
