Is It Normal?

I have one male goldfish (how lucky for him to have 7 females) and he lives by himself right now. I noticed that when I first brought him home his breeding stars were VERY pronounced as he lived with females in the pet store (saw him following other fish quite close). Now that he's been alone, the stars on his gill covers are pretty much gone. The stars on the pec. fins are still present though. If a male fish is alone long enough, is it normal for the breeding stars to go away? Would they come back if I was to put a female in the tank with him?

They come and go all their lives, although some fish have them permanently. They'll come back once he is under "the influence" of a girlfriend...
