Regular Member kflynt2004 Posted September 6, 2005 Regular Member Share Posted September 6, 2005 do u recognize it? if yes, apart from beeing sharp, is it safe for my tank?
Regular Member sandy Posted September 6, 2005 Regular Member Share Posted September 6, 2005 Could it be Basalt ? not sure, but it looks really porous and may take the ph up. Pour vinegar on it and see if it fizzes. If it does then dont use it, but saying that it doesnt look safe to me, and not something i would put in my tanks. Had another look, its not a lump of concrete is it?

Regular Member sandy Posted September 6, 2005 Regular Member Share Posted September 6, 2005 Ah, you know, thats what i first thought as well and as you are in Greece it would make sense. I always thought lava rock was black though lol. Lava rock is used in African tanks to keep the water hard for them. Whats your ph? Maybe soaking it for a few weeks and boiling it will eventually make it ok for the tank but i wouldnt use it unless the water is soft and then only a little bit of it to test. Need someone a bit more up with their rocks K, but i would be interested in knowing what others think.
Regular Member kflynt2004 Posted September 6, 2005 Author Regular Member Share Posted September 6, 2005 oh. i thought lava was neutral for the water and didnt affect it at all. so it does affect the water? what other kind of neutral rock should I use to attach plants on? Regular Member sandy Posted September 6, 2005 Regular Member Share Posted September 6, 2005 If it doesnt fizz then its supposed to be fine. Its just that people keeping hard water fish use lava rock. Maybe put it in a bucket and leave it for a few days and then test the water for the ph and see if it changes.
