i just recently doubled the amount of bio-ball thingies in my big tank to prepare for being overstocked in the near future...is it possible to have too much bio balls in there?

It would only be a problem if it impedes waterflow or inhibits the filter function in some way. However, one problem with trying to buildup biological filtration to prepare for overstocking is that if the change in biomass is large and sudden (as it usually is), you'll have a minicycle anyway. The biobugs can only colonize to the extent that there is waste for them to break down. So, you can put all the media in you want...and the biobug count will be the same until they have more waste to work on. That is unless you use the precolonized stuff and add it at the same time as overstocking...I've never used the precolonized stuff though so I don't know if it stands up to its claims of instant biological filtration establishment.
