Regular Member fishies724 Posted July 16, 2005 Regular Member Share Posted July 16, 2005 i have had fish in my tank for about a week now and i have put in a serving of turbostart the last 2 days but my ammonia and nitrite reading are still 0 so i was wondering why my tank hasnt begun to cycle yet? Regular Member Florissa Posted July 16, 2005 Regular Member Share Posted July 16, 2005 How big is the tank, how many fish and how big are the fish? If the fish are pretty small in a large tank, they will not affect the tank's cycle right away.

Regular Member DataGuru Posted July 18, 2005 Regular Member Share Posted July 18, 2005 That's interesting. an earthy smell is how a cycled filter smells. So what are your nitrAte readings?
Regular Member fishies724 Posted July 18, 2005 Author Regular Member Share Posted July 18, 2005 well another day same story and my nitrate readings are 0ppm, but when i take the top off my filter the smell definitely gets stronger. ANy idea on what's goin on?
Regular Member DataGuru Posted July 18, 2005 Regular Member Share Posted July 18, 2005 with 3 babies in a 30 gallon, they aren't producing much ammonia. and since there's not a lot of debris, the bacteria that eat debris aren't producing much ammonia either. I'd say keep an eye on it and be happy that you're not overstocked and battling ammonia! So could you post all your water test readings?
Regular Member fishies724 Posted July 18, 2005 Author Regular Member Share Posted July 18, 2005 ammoia 0ppm, nitrites 0ppm, nitrates 0, ph7.
Regular Member DataGuru Posted July 19, 2005 Regular Member Share Posted July 19, 2005 Looks good. Down the road when your goldies get bigger, you will need to keep an eye on your pH. It will tend to slip down over time with a larger bioload.
Regular Member fishies724 Posted July 19, 2005 Author Regular Member Share Posted July 19, 2005 so does this mean that somehow my tank is cycled?
Regular Member DataGuru Posted July 19, 2005 Regular Member Share Posted July 19, 2005 The smell is a good sign, but I don't see any nitrAtes. Please do keep us posted on your water test readings.

Regular Member DataGuru Posted July 21, 2005 Regular Member Share Posted July 21, 2005 Starting to see ammonia finally. You have quite a bit of leeway on ammonia with pH of 7.4.
Regular Member fishies724 Posted July 22, 2005 Author Regular Member Share Posted July 22, 2005 ammonia .50, and nitrites are at .
Regular Member fishies724 Posted July 22, 2005 Author Regular Member Share Posted July 22, 2005 well i must say i am an idiot! i have been using turboostart for 1 week and am seeing good results but i just realized today i was using about 1/8 the recommended dosage so i should see some extreme results now that i know what i was doing wrong but now i expect my cycle to be done within the week.
