I'm interested in what you think are the main reasons goldfish die. Mainly thinking of the ones kept as pets in houses not by breeders.

If you could rate them from the number one reason down to as many as you can think of, that would be even more interesting. This is my go:

1. Poor water quality from overfeeding

2. Poor water quality from accomodation being too small

3. Poor water quality from overcrowding

4. Poor water from not cleaning

5. Sudden water changes

6. Swim bladder infection

7. Introduction of disease or parasite from other fish or plants

8. Cats

9. Toddlers

10. Untreated tap water.

It's pretty hard when you think about it.

Your first five points all relate to water quality. Points 2 & 3 are very similar so I'll lump them together and say they are the most likely reason, closely followed by points 4 and 1.

I think that is pretty close!

I think 2 and 3 pretty much are the same thing or at least go hand in hand.

1. Poor water from not cleaning

2. Poor water quality from accomodation being too small (overcrowding.)

3. Poor water quality from overfeeding

4. Sudden water changes

7. Introduction of disease or parasite from other fish or plants

6. Swim bladder infection

7. Untreated tap water.

8. Cat's and Dogs (My dog loves pond fish  )

9. Toddlers

10. Old Age (hopefully :D )

Yes... toddler. They come toddling in all cute and happy after being angelically quiet for hours and say: "Look! Me catch fishy!" Then they hold up a tight little fist with a bundle of orange fins sticking up. You leap up horrified, and scream, "Let it go!" but a toddler's first reaction to leaping horrified parents is to squeeze fist tighter and hide behind back...

... mice are equally prone to toddler attack.

Overcrowding and small bowls are the same thing. Also toddler and cat could just come under predation. ;)

I left out the suicide jumpers. Goldfish who leap to their deaths. I heard they thought they were leaping to cleaner water outside the bowl... altho why people try to guess what a goldfish is thinking, is beyond me.

I like to think about what my gf are thinking. I also talk to my dog! :D . its not a real " gee, I wonder what they are thinking right now?' it's more of a " gee, I wonder how a gf thinks". Its not wierd, there are some famous ppl who got great inventions by thinking like that.... Danardo....... Davinci........

Sandy was the only one who said lack of filtration--that is big one--lack of adequate filtration.

Of course that has to do with water quality...

Speaking of toddlers.... I had fish when I was a kid and came home to find my little brother catching them with his hands and feeding them to the cat. :yikes:yikes:yikes His excuse was that the cat wanted them.

That's a pretty good order.

It's hard to come up ten clear reasons because they are interrelated. Like overcrowding causes poor water quality. Fish leap to their deaths because of poor water quality. Feeding your fish chicken and beer (another thread) is ignorant but causes poor water quality. Some diseases are fungal... yep, poor water quality.

I thought this was an easy topic but the more I think about it the harder it becomes... it's like thinking in a moebius strip pattern.

:goodpost I hope people doing a little casual research will come by this post!

Here's my variation - since people are animals, too:

1) Water quality

2) Animals - mainly by human animals screwing up no. 1

3) Disease - mainly due to no. 1, and executed by no. 2

Now, it's a cycle! Of life or death is our choice... ;)
