How often should the tank light be on?

I turn in off at night, and leave it off all day until I get home from work; it's then on for AVG 3 hours in the evening.

I have one fintail. Is this okay for him? and whats the benefits of having it on longer?

Fish like a "day" just like people do. Having the light on for him gives him this daylight. If you have a full specturm light, it will also help to enhance his coloration. Nothing can match the bright scales of a pond fish who has the sun!

If you have real plants in the tank, they will grow. IF you have nice green algae in the tank, it will grow and be good food for the fish as well as process an amount of nitrate - nitrate you do not have to mechanically remove from the tank with a water change.

I turn on my lights in the morning when I get up and turn them off when I go to bed. Changing temperatures and lighting times can stimulate breeding behaviors. Since I do not want to do this, I maintain a fairly regular schedule of lighting and temperature.

:)
