It sounds like you have an outbreak of saproglenia or common water mould. A good water change and a dose of salt should get rid of it. It's not highly dangerous stuff but not good either, it can grow inside the fishes gills and cause irritation/damage.

A dose of .1% salt (1 teaspoon per gallon) should be sufficient to do the trick. If it's still around 48hrs later add another .1%.

It is possible too that it is a planaria outbreak. They are just a common flatworm, harmless to fish except for fry. They usually overpopulate when there has been a period of overfeeding or insufficient gravel vacuuming. I would do a nice deep gravel vac and cut back on feeding. You should see them start to disappear after a few days.

I had this problem a lot when I was using deep gravel beds or undergravel filters. Now that I have very thin layers of gravel in some tanks (and no more UGFs!) I havent had the problem.
