Regular Member ryukingirl793 Posted April 30, 2005 Regular Member Share Posted April 30, 2005 My mom hates the noise made by my filter, and I hate the fact that it's a super ineffective Topfin, so I have decided to get a new filter. But I'm worried. I know full well I can't just toss it and start with a brand new filter, so what do I do? Do I have to keep it and use both for a while or what? :listen:
Regular Member Raith Posted April 30, 2005 Regular Member Share Posted April 30, 2005 you can run that and new filter at the same time. bact. will dispense in water.
Regular Member LaurieP Posted April 30, 2005 Regular Member Share Posted April 30, 2005 You can also take the filter floss (the white spongy stuff) from the old and either put it in a place in the new filter or put it in a nylon and hang it in the back of your tank. I would recommend not doing a water change at the same time as you do replace the filter.
Regular Member ryukingirl793 Posted April 30, 2005 Author Regular Member Share Posted April 30, 2005 Thanks for the advice. The problem with putting the old media in the new filter is that topfin cartridges are basically a large foam pouch with carbon in it. That's all. It probably wouldn't fit. <_<
Regular Member emmahj Posted April 30, 2005 Regular Member Share Posted April 30, 2005 Cut up the foam and put as much in the new filter as you can. If it *really* won't fit then simply squeeze all the gunge and gunk from the old foam pads into the media of the new filter: you'll get tons of biobugs in by doing that. Just keep a close eye on the parameters for the enxt week or so afterwards.
