Air Pumps

I have never really worried about air pumps - I pretty much have used whatever I had or could find. The sound has never been of much concern for they are in other rooms.

I now have to sleep guests in a room that also houses 5 tanks. I had a particularly old and noisy air pump. So I replaced it with a Rena 200.

All I can say is ........... WOW. That is a really quiet pump! I am truly impressed. I did not think there really could be too much difference between the different brands - they all use the diaphrams to pump the air and diaphrams cause noise.

Not in the Rena.

Now that is an air pump!!!!!! I think I shall have to slowly replace all of mine......

I personally love the "Tetratec? Deep Water Air Pumps". I have been using them for years. They are very quite too. Plus there great for those tall tanks.

I have TetraTec pumps - and I like them a lot. They are easy to service and do a great job. I do not have the deep water ones - I have not seen them before. They sound very good, too!!!!!

I had to find the deep ones since my 36 gal tank is a very tall one. So to get the pumps to work with out stress I had to find this kind. I think any pump that is quite is the best....

i have an airo one. DO NOT BUY IT. they are advertised as being silent but the vibrations from the noise in my tank make the glass shake! its like a foghorn!! god knows what my fish hear/feel.

You know - now that this thread has popped to the top again - I am going to revise my initial opinion of the Rena pump. It is the noisest one in the room! The "quiet" only lasted for about 1 week and since then! I will stick with my Tetras, like Koko.

That is very strange, Daryl - most of mine are Rena's (although the biggest one, the 400), and after years and years of use none of mine ever made any kind of noise. I think the oldest one I have is around 5 years old, and I never had to replace any part of it.

Tetratec deep waters are very good too, and they are basically indestructable. The one I have, the 96/2, at one point ran for 1 1/2 years outside on a 4 ft deep pond. Rain, shine, and hurricanes, and that thing runs and runs. It isn't even made for outdoors, I believe, but that didn't bother it one bit. I don't know about the noise level, since it was outside, and I never paid attention to it.

So far, I think they are all noisy! But, the Rena I have now is less noisy. It has kept the same noise level - I think it is the 200 - so I don't know about a more powerful one, though I may get one soon.... but they get pricey the bigger they get...

I really liked this airpunp - looks powerful, but it was recommended for deep tanks so I thought I might pass it along - and also commented to be louder than the Rena, for that reason - it is deep water pump: Maybe I will try it!
