Brown gunk on glass

There is brown gunk or algae residue or something on the sides of the tank. How do I remove it from the glass.

I removed most of the water so I can look at it but my tank is forty or fifty five gallons and I have two five gallon buckets. I guess I can put the goldfish into one of the buckets but is that necessary to clean the sides.

Adding to that I normally clean the algae off before a waterchange and then most of it gets siphoned out when I drain the tank, and the fish have fun chasing pieces around. I have a mix of green algae and brown algae (diatoms) though

What if I do not have one? Can a screw driver work?

No it will break the tank.

No one will listen to me. It looks like I got to do it their way. That is empty the tank completely and try to figure out how to clean it.

If you want to drain and clean it out. You can use Vinagar that should help, but you will need a razor blade or an algae scrapper :)

Algae scraper works as does a scrubby that is finely textured.  I wouldn't use a screwdriver as that might scratch the glass.  I scrape off the algae in my tanks before I do a water change/cleaning with the fish inside...
