    • * Nitrate level(Tank): 40ppm
    • * Ammonia Level(Tap)
    • * Nitrite Level(Tap)
    • * Nitrate level(Tap): 10ppm
    • * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)
    • * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)
    • Other Required Info:
      • * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API drops
      • * Water temperature? 83 (it's hot in NY right now)
      • * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 40 Breeder, 3yrs
      • * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Fluval 406
      • * How often do you change the water and how much? once a week about 50%
  • * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 1 wk ~50%
  • * How many fish in the tank and their size? 3 I large goldfish 1 tiny goldfish, 1 bn pleco, ~2-3"
  • * What kind of water additives or conditioners? none (I have well water)
  • * What do you feed your fish and how often? been feeding twice a day, morning and night. Omega One Flakes
  • * Any new fish added to the tank? Yes, the small goldfish. Added it after my other fish passed away =\ I added him very recently because I quarantined him first. I took it out today and put him in a different tank.
  • * Any medications added to the tank? no
  • * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. Little fish got salt in quarantine tank. So this tank hasn't seen medication/salt.
  • * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? bloody streaks on tail, swollen eye. Also her dorsal fin is ripped. I found the small fish picking on her today when I got home (although not her fin, but her body), didn't see him doing that before!! I don't know if it's because the large fish is sick. Don't know if he's the one that ripped her tail! She wasn't like this last night :(
  • * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Yes. Came home today found her sideways lying on the bottom. Now she's up but still bottom sitting.

I'm so upset right now, came home to my 7 yr old goldfish lying on its side at the bottom of the tank under a driftwood. She had 1 eye swollen and i'm not kidding by the time I fed my toddler, did a few things now her other eye is swollen as well. She has blood streaks on her tail. After a little while she came out, 'got up' straight but now is just bottom sitting.  Is she gonna die? My other goldie died suddenly beginning of June, he had no symptoms, just came home to him floating sideways and the next day he was gone.  I added another goldfish to the tank since she seemed so depressed without a buddy. But I quarantined him and he looks ok. I took him out of the tank as soon as I got home today bc he was picking on my sick goldie, snapping at her body. Could he have hurt her fin? Her dorsal fin seems damaged. The blood scares me, is it an infection? ughh. I didn't take all the water measurements, just wanted to get this posted asap.

She was fine last night... unfortunately I didn't look at her this morning :(  which is stupid bc I've been feeding morning and night and I didn't feed her this morning, I was in such a rush. So I don't know if she was ok this morning or not:cry. I'm attaching 2 pictures, hopefully you can see what's going on.   I actually had noticed she was a little bit pale if that makes any sense, like not as orange - but she was acting fine, I didn't think much of it. I'm so upset I really don't want her to die, I've had her for so long. What do I do?

First thing I would like you to do is test the ph in the tank and tap. Make sure it matches. If so I want you to take out all the that wood  and ornaments out of the tank.

Then do a 50% water change tonight and then in the morning. I would also like you to clean your filter, and dump the water out of it. :)

It seems your fish has some kind of bacterial issue going on as that one eye is puffed out and red streaks in the fish. :(

I just changed the water and cleaned the filter - filter was very clean.  I also took the pleco out of the tank, so the sick goldie is alone in there now. I had actually just added epsom salt, out of everything I read seemed like the least risky thing to do (I added a tsp to the 40 gallon). I wasn't sure if I'd get any answers tonight but I didn't feel like going to bed without doing something and waking up to no eyes or something.

Ok, I checked the tap is 7.2. The tank is 7.4, so not exactly the same... is it close enough?? I took all the ornaments out, just have the bubble wand in there since the water get so warm. That's what I was afraid of with the red streaks, bacterial infection :(, if I need antibiotics i'll have to buy some tomorrow morning. I almost don't want to go to sleep =\ I'll do another water change in the morning, hopefully she's still ok then.

Thank you so much.

I would like you to get Maracyn-Two or kanamycin. Both would be good.

Also do you have a 10 Gallon container you can treat in? It would make your life a little easier than treating the tank.

The correct dose for Epsom salt is 1/4 teaspoon for every 10 US gallons of water. it's such a small amount of product, however it brings the desired results at a pace where the fish can handle it without adverse effects

This is crazy, i called vets, pharmacies, petstores. Nobody has it. Is it worth stopping by the place that has antibiotics and get something there? I cant remember the names but i can write when i get there. At least so i can order online....? I'm getting desperate but i know obv. not all antibiotics work on everything. Not sure what else to do.

I have a 10 gallon, i have my other 2 fish in there, i moved them from the big tank yesterday. Is it safe to move them back to the main tank? Will they get sick? This way i can move the sick fish to the 10gallon.

I would go with Metronidazole (Metroplex, Hikari Metro +, or API General Cure). Kanamycin (Kanaplex) would be the second choice. Nitrofurazone (Furan-2), Triple Sulfa (Tri Sulfa), or Oxytetracycline (Ken's Fish has a good pellet and Angels Plus makes good powder) would be my next choices. I can't honestly say I've seen Maracyn 2 used on advancing infections with much luck. Regular Tetracycline I've seen work on Betta fish and other small tropicals, but it doesn't seem to do much for goldfish.
