fishstiks 16 Posted May 8, 2017 Hey all, I have been treating 2 my goldfish in a 20g hospital tank since last week for a little case of Fin Rot. The fin rot is clearing up very nicely with Furan 2, but Mellow, my yellow guy, has some strange red sores that don't seem to be going away at all, even with daily 100% water changes and Furan. These sores are on his left side, right on his lateral line, behind the gill. There are about 4 little sores, bright red, slightly raised, with a white center. They look very much like a pimple. He is also now showing some redness on his under belly (between his two bottom fins). I have not examined him closely yet, but it looks more like red sores from bottom sitting. I don't see him bottom sitting, most of the time he is free swimming, and he is eating normal. I am doing daily 100% water changes, double dosing prime, and treating with Furan 2 (for the fin rot). This does not seem to have had any affect on these sores, they will look a little better for a day or so, and then they are there again. Same spot always. Not sure what to even think of this, or how to begin to handle it. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. These pics are a few days old, I will try to get some better pictures tonight of his side, and also his underbelly. http:// http:// Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) .25 - .50 (hospital tank no filter) * Nitrite Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrate level(Tank) haven't tested * Ammonia Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrate level(Tap) haven't tested * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) didn't test * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) didn't test Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? Arctic Mama 3,638 Posted May 9, 2017 (edited) I'm going to need a lot clearer picture, unfortunately. If you can hold him up to the glass or out of the water with one hand and take a nice macro picture with flash and then no flash, that should do it. fishstiks 16 Posted May 9, 2017 Here is a better picture, taken last night. I was watching him closely, and he does seem to be bottom sitting a little more than I would like to see, but....I have the lights off in the kitchen where the hospital tank is so it is fairly dark and quiet in there. He is still eating happily and acting normal. I think the bottom sitting is more like resting due to it being dark and quiet. http:// http://

Arctic Mama 3,638 Posted May 10, 2017 Hmm, what medications do you have on hand? The sores and red belly have me thinking it's an internal infection, which would make sense given the water quality issues. Please be dosing prime and doing more water changes if you haven't already - that ammonia is only going to make things worse. Daily 100% water changes or every other day with prime dosing on the off days is best.
fishstiks 16 Posted May 11, 2017 I am doing daily 100% water changes and using prime. He is still being treated with Furan 2 (both fish, for fin rot issues). I don't want to jinx it, but, his underbelly looks much better tonight and is almost completely non-red again. I think the underbelly might have been from bottom sitting. I opened the kitchen blinds today and let them have some natural light, and they seemed much more active than when it is dark in there. The sores on his side look a tiny bit better too, but not a marked improvement there. I have Salt, Furan 2, API general cure, paraguard, metroplex, melafix and pimafix. I am also close to a couple big box pet stores and Amazon is my best friend. ? Was thinking of adding salt, but haven't yet as I am not sure if I can with the Furan.
Arctic Mama 3,638 Posted May 11, 2017 (edited) If you're going to run a med with the furan, especially if it is helping, do kanaplex or oxytetracycline. This is most likely gram negative (aeromonas/pseudomonas) and that's even more likely if it is responding to the furan-2. Continue the furan whole ontaining one of those meds, and then poke me when you get one and we can go from there if there are still symptoms. Remember to do the full two week course of furan. We may even extend it to three, depending on how symptoms are looking. Edited May 11, 2017 by Arctic Mama
fishstiks 16 Posted May 17, 2017 Update: I have been treating with Furan 2 for almost 2 weeks. It will be exactly 2 weeks tomorrow. Both fish look really good. No signs of fin rot. Should I continue with a 3rd week, or wait and see? If not, I think I am ready to move the larger fish back to the main tank, and keep Mellow in the hospital tank a little longer. His underbelly is completely healed and his lateral line looks really good. I can still see the spots on his lateral line, but there is no redness........its almost like he just has enlarged pores right there. Not sure what to do with him. I have not ordered any other meds yet, but I can order them prime and have them here in 2 days. If I order, should I go with Kanaplex or oxytetracycline? http:// http://
