Flipper 13,057 Posted November 15, 2016 I'm revamping my 55 gallon tank. I removed the sand and gave away all the jungley plants. I also removed my blue print cloth background that was affixed to whiteboard. It was getting moldy. Now, the back of my tank is just naked wall and I HATE the way it looks. I know they sell the plasticky blue or black background that you can tape to the back of the tank. I may just end up doing this I also have seen many people here and on Instagram paint the outside glass. I'm too lazy to disassemble everything for that. Please, anybody have creative aquarium background ideas?

Flipper 13,057 Posted November 15, 2016 Lol I have one of the "plasticky" thingies you speak of. Wish I was creative! I'm probably heading in this direction too Does water dribble down the back of it.
mjfromga 1,784 Posted November 15, 2016 Yup it does! I try and put my filters way near the outside of the tank so the filter water if I move the sponges etc. that sometimes gets down there I can easily wipe off.
DawnMichele 6,045 Posted November 16, 2016 (edited) I have the plastic background's also!!!! What about the background's that go inside the tank? Would something like that work for your tank? Edited November 16, 2016 by DawnMichele
Flipper 13,057 Posted November 16, 2016 I have the plastic background's also!!!! What about the background's that go inside the tank? Would something like that work for your tank?I don't want to do that because it will take up valuable swimming space and gallonage. But I appreciate the suggestion I love the plants you gave me! they give an excellent splash of color in my tank! Thanks again! fantailfan1 26,742 Posted November 16, 2016 Those deep blue backgrounds are fabulous. I priced one for my tank and it was ONLY $105 plus shipping. . I didn't pay that much for my tank. I tend to like the plain backgrounds. Kinda boring I guess but I like the simplicity of them. And the fish really pop. And you know I looove the self adhesive ocean vision backgrounds....

shellbell4ever 1,381 Posted November 16, 2016 I have used poster board, but it does sometimes get wet, contact paper from a home improvement store, the pet store plastic ones are the easiest to apply, also have used pleather type material from the fabric store my personal favorite I'm currently using poster board until my next trip to town to the nearest pet store
Daniel 5,668 Posted November 16, 2016 What about frosted glass? A lot of people in the aquascaping community seem to just use the stick on frosted film you get at the hardware store for windows.

AquaAurora 357 Posted November 17, 2016 If you want a painted background but don't want to tear down/move the tank you can make a painted insert using acrylic sheets or lexan and krylon fusion spray paint: just get more creative than my simply black I did. http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/145-finnex/189944-finnex-ray-ii-fugeray-par-data.html I like the cloth background idea myself but understand mold can be an issue if there's splashing/spills. I can't recall their seller name but I remember seeing someone that does colored glass work on small tanks on e-bay, but I'd imagine getting something for a 55g would be pricey.

AquaAurora 357 Posted November 17, 2016 (edited) You could try getting the plain blue/black background and get stick decals like these (just look up "home decal" or "home wall stick art" on google for more images) http://home.ewoodys.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Large-Vinyl-Wall-Decals.jpg https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1o3jTMVXXXXcCXpXXq6xXFXXXa/Cheap-Kids-Room-Mirror-3D-font-b-Wall-b-font-Sticker-Sun-Flower-Art-Home-decoration.jpg https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/7c/20/df/7c20dfc5b622df7d6e6f7685f6c1dc9b.jpg http://www.dhresource.com/albu_393242365_00-1.0x0/reci-n-llegados-de-vinilo-efecto-espejo-de.jpg http://kotelok.co/photos-bedroom-design-animal-wall-mural/swan-birds-wall-decal-lake-vinyl-stickers-flying-animal-home-interior-design-art-murals-bedroom-bathroom/ http://g01.a.alicdn.com/kf/HTB12IrHLFXXXXaUXXXXq6xXFXXXb/2pcs-Left-Right-Flying-Feather-3D-Vinyl-Wall-Stickers-Home-Decor-font-b-House-b-font.jpg http://kotelok.co/photos-bedroom-design-animal-wall-mural/swan-birds-wall-decal-lake-vinyl-stickers-flying-animal-home-interior-design-art-murals-bedroom-bathroom/ http://tomcruiseforums.com/vinyl-wall-stickers.html/vinyl-wall-stickers-great-home-design-planning-with-vinyl-wall-stickers-wall-stickers-vinyl-art decor.slimrandles.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/modern-Whttp://tomcruiseforums.com/vinyl-wall-stickers.html/vinyl-wall-stickers-great-home-design-planning-with-vinyl-wall-stickers-wall-stickers-vinyl-artall-home-decor-decals.jpg Can get real creative if you get simple shapes/designs and mix-n-match to make something real unique. This link brought me to finnex lighting so I don't exactly know what you mean. I like the fabric background too and it's what I had before, BUT it got moldy. This is a big deal as my parrot cage is directly adjacent to my tank and I don't want Leto to get sick from any mold. Flipper 13,057 Posted November 18, 2016 What if you hook a background Nice idea but it's too expensive. If I was going to hook something, I just buy one of those fancy costly backgrounds. #hookedrugscost$

jenzaar 11,605 Posted November 19, 2016 I'm late to this thread! I haven't looked at all the links supplied so maybe this has already been mentioned But on the 40B, I just got a few sheets of scrapbooking paper and taped them all together. I got this cool shiny, crinkly purple paper which 1) adds a nice texture if you don't want a flat looking back, and 2) hides the seams a little bit. Tape em, cut it to shape, add a tie-dye peace sign I have made plenty of messes on that tank (it's the one I always seems to overflow ) but it still looks good. I can't for the life of me find good full-tank shots, or the thread when I first set it up, so here's a crappy video?
