Ammonia in tap- should I filter my home's water?

Recommended Posts

So, some of you know I'm struggling with ammonia in my tap water which isn't good for my main tank or QT or I'm thinking the humans, birds and dog :(

I wonder if I get a home water filtration system will that remove the ammonia? Is this a solution?

When I lived in San Diego I had a huge problem with that. I ended up buying one of these and it did the trick. This plus Prime.http://familybedrock.com/category/garden-hose-filter

Thanks :) did you hook it up to the sink faucet?

I hooked a hose up to the faucet and then this to the end of the hose (somewhere in my blog page there are photos of how I did it http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/forum/index.php?/topic/121445-goldfishgirl82s-world-of-fish/ ). My ammonia there was at 2ppm out of the tap and this took it down to 0.25ppm which prime can take care of.

She posted a pic in her QT thread.  It looks like 1.0 ppm ammonia to me. . . .  Take a look.

Yes Sharon, Lisa is right. I'm concerned about everyone in the house consuming ammonia. I'm also worried about the fish :(

Thanks Crystal. :D

For what it's worth, I'm in the southern part of San Diego, county, consistently have ammonia at 1.0 ppm out of the tap, & I just double dose Prime when doing water changes for my fish tanks. If it was higher than that, I'd definitely use Crystal's solution! :)

I do appreciate your input :)
