We are talking about what could have happened. Have thaw fish been exposed to any other fish tanks, plants, or animals since you have had them?

No... They both originally came from the same tank directly to mine...

And no plants added, no dirty nets, nothing? These are your only fish correct?

Yes, you are correct ... Nothing but the take up tubes, air stone and thermometer ...

We are chatting about this on the back end and another team member will be along to help you. You did order the oxytetracycline medicated food, correct? If so, that is probably the first treatment we will try. Stand by for further help from another team member and have a wonderful day. I hope we can help your remaining fish :)

Chris - we are waiting on the schedule of the other mods and helpers to decide how to proceed. Nothing about this is emergent based on what you indicated of the tank history, more likely the stress of the nitrite issues weakened your first fish's immune system and the an existing bacteria in his system was able to take hold and overwhelm him. But there is nothing to suggest the same thing can happen to your current fish as it is unlikely this was a parasite or communicable virus or bacteria like streptococcus or columnaris.

The poop and everything else you are seeing is consistent with stress, which your water issues would definitely warrant. We aren't ignoring you but I don't personally want to advise further on your treatment with Lisa, Helen, and the rest of our bang up awesome team weighing in, which we are doing on the back end. Keep focusing on your water and just be patient for medication advice, as it would be better to be cautious and nail the right treatment that get it wrong and give the fish unnecessary antibiotics :)

Nobody has forgotten you, and they will get back with you when schedules permit. Deep breaths :grouphug

Thank you I really didn't mean to imply that that I was being ignored... When Helen chimed in I thought she had picked up the thread..

I am truly sorry if I offended some anyone on the team...

I misunderstood... ????

Chris, please tell us what kind of thing you see on the side of the fish. A swelling?  A projection?  An indentation?  A discoloration?

By right side, do you mean the fish's right side or the right side of the picture?

We might be able to see it if you took a picture looking down on the fish.

If the only poop you see in the tank looks like what you showed, you may have a problem.

If you want to stock a "medicine cabinet" for your goldfish for any future issues that may come up, here are somethings to consider:

  • Salt - for external parasites/slime coat/healing
  • Epsom Salt - for bloating/constipation/internal parasites
  • Praziquantel - for flukes/worms
  • Metroplex (metronidazole)- for anaerobic bacteria/internal parasites
  • Kanaplex (kanamycin) - for gram negative bacteria and fungal infections
  • API Furan-2 - for external infections on the skin or fins
  • Triple Sulfa  - good to combine with other meds for serious cases of dropsy, etc.

You are in good hands with the mod team!

Chris here... It is a very small projection that is the same color as the scale area..  It is floaty,  meaning if i remove him from the water it lays right down and I cannot see it against his coloration.  I will post some pictures of the area effected...   but they are not sharp due his constant movement in the water...  I have out of water pics, but I can not see it...  :(

The location and best viewing of the issue is when he faces the camera...  based on that position it is on the right side of the picture where the belly indents to the peduncle area, about two thirds the way down from the top of the body. There are two patches of light scales in that area...  it is located in the lower light patch... In some pictures the color of those scales in that area looks a little off but that may be the light when the picture is caught.  I just looked at him again... the little floaty thing is very pale orange like his body...  It kind of reminds me of a very small long skin tag...  i hope that helps ...  Pictures to follow...

Thank you....

Chris here... I performed a 75% water change this morning due to the continuing nitrite issue the tank has...I siphoned the tank and take up tubes thuroghly... Mr. Potato Head's poop has improved... A light version of his normal waste but very broken up... The area on his side is still there but more difficult to see... I guess you could say more flimsy in movement... Hard to tell...

Thank you.."

Chris,

is there any salt in the tank at the moment?

how would you feel like plucking that protrusion off?

other than that protrusion, do you believe anything else is wrong with this fish?

and on a non related matter, please list for me the meds you have at hand and the meds which are ordered to be received in the next few days.

Good morning,

Yes, there is salt in the tank (20 g tank) @ 1 teaspoon per 10 gallons.

The meds I have in house are:

API Aquarium Salt

T.C. Tetracycline

Fungus Cure

General Cure

Melafix

Health Aid: PraziPro

Seachem: MetroPlex

Shipped meds:

Was supposed th arrive today, Seachem SulfaPlex but got an email of delayed delivery :(

Oxytetracycline and Kanamycin Sulfate medicated fish food shipped Monday, (2day delivery) should arrive today tomorrow at the latest...

As far as plucking the protrusion off... I'm not sure I can... If I take him from the water it lays down and due to the color of it I cannot see it nor feel it ... If I try to in tank he is too active that I might hurt him with the tweezers... I might be able scrape it off but I do not know what to scape it with that would not damage him...

I can check with my sons or neighbors to see if I can find someone with that has a microscope and get back with you on that...

Other symptoms: occasional frantic swim and diving down to the floor of the tank (sometimes smacking himself silly), his poops that I see this morning are a light grey in color but not shear...

He seems to be swimming normally right now... He ate well this morning... 2 bites of gel food and 6 pellets of Hakari Lionhead sinking pellets.

Water testing numbers to follow (still dealing with nitrites)

More to follow.... Thank you!
