75% should be fine.

Will do.... :)

Shakaho, Chris here... 75% WC completed... Post WC numbers: ammonia = .25, nitrite = .25, nitrate = 5

I'm so sorry that you have a sick fish and the extra work that comes with it.  I hope guy responds well to treatment.  Not showing signs of stress makes his chances look better.

Here's the experiment.  We want to set up models of  water changes with and without Prime.

You need:

Two clean containers that hold more than a cup.  They don't have to be the same.

A bucket of tap water treated with Prime at the same concentration you will have in your tank.  I can help with the concentration.

Then the experiment becomes very simple.

Add 1/4 cup of pre-water-change tank water to each container.

Add 3/4 cup of untreated tap water to one container.

Add 3/4 cup of water from the bucket treated with Prime to the other container.

Stir both containers.

Test each for nitrite.

Report.

Good morning Shakaho, I'm sorry to say that "Guy". Did not make it thru the night.... :( I Just came down stairs and he is gone... Now I'm concerned for Mr. Potato Head... Is racing around in the tank... Up, down all around... :(

I'll be happy to do the water testing as soon as I get my wits about me... I will do the normal water test shortly since Mr. Potato Head swimming behavior has my attention....

I'm so sorry and also worried about Mr. Potato Head.  Racing around the tank may indicate he's afraid he will get caught and disappear like Guy did.

Dear Koko,

Thank you for the support... It's gonna be a tough day... But we keep, keeping along... I have another fish to save... I must have many lessons to learn here... I pray that I learn them without any more loss of life...

In gratitude,

Chris

.

Thank you Shakaho... I'm keeping a close eye on him... Not that that does anything for him, but it helps me focus on the next steps for the tank...

I have tested this mornings water... pH - 8.0, ammonia= 0-.25, nitrite = 5, nitrate = 10-20...

I have pulled water for the experiment testing and set it aside... What do you recommend for the WC amout today.... I'd like to do that b4 the testing... And should I do any thing different to the tank today??? Guy was not returned to the tank after yesterday's WC.... And he did pass in his hospital tub... I just want to make sure the tank is safe as possible for Mr. Potato Head....

Why don't you change all of the water this time, just so you feel more confident.

When I clean my stuff I use  bleach and hot water... Just get the tub and all the stuff if it will fit in the tub. Fill it with warm water and a cap of bleach. Let it sit for a few hours. Then Rinse and rinse and if you want rinse again. Then fill again with water and then a cap of Prime... Rinse again and let sit in the sun :)

Oh Im not Sharon but thats how I do it :)

Chris here.... Shakaho, I have completed the experiment...

The test on the left is the prime treated water with pre WC water... And the test on the right is the tap water with pre WC water.... The bottom is the pre WC water only....

Very good.  So you have shown that fresh Prime in the water makes  1ppm nitrite read as 0.5 ppm.    Your nitrite readings no longer qualify as impossible.  1ppm after a 75% water change means you had 4ppm before the change.

Within a few hours,  most, if not all, of the Prime has bound to other molecules, so yesterday's Prime doesn't affect the nitrite reading any more.

Chris here...  I'm starting to dislike auto fill...  :(    I wanted to say, provided that Mr. Potato Head continues to be ok...

You should have 1/2 the nitrite with just one fish.  Do a 50% water change every other day.  I don't think it necessary to test anything other than nitrite, and that only before the water change.  Since  "5 ppm" on the test card can be  larger than 5 ppm, to get an accurate nitrite reading, do the following:

Dilute the tank water with tap water (no Prime, of course)  :)  using one part tank water and 3 parts tap water.  A "part" can be anything you can easily measure -- a teaspoon, tablespoon,  etc.

Stir or shake to mix.  It doesn't take much.

Test the diluted sample for nitrite.

Multiply by 4 to get the tank nitrite.

Chris here... Ok, I can do that this morning... To see what we get... I won't plan a WC today unless I hear different from you... I will share the morning numbers with you shortly... :)

Chris here... I have followed your instructions... And the number is 2....

You I couldn't just test the nitrites... Still messed up from loosing Guy... So here is TMI....

PH=8.0, ammonia = 0, nitrite = 2-5, nitrate = 5.

New method of nitrite testing = 2.0. :). .50 x 4 = 2.0

Chris here on a side note... Mr Potato Head is still here... Still swimming frantic on occasion but eating well... I noticed something on his Side very small... I posted a video on Guy's post but it's very difficult to see... But hope someone can look at it... And tell me if I need to be concerned... And or start a new thread...

Thank you....

PS: going with no WC unless you say different....

With nitrite at 2 I would do a WC but let's see what Sharon thinks.  :idont

On a side note, I can now say I've spread my BBs from sea to shining sea.  :tomuch:

Sent out some media this morning to California, years ago to *someone* :teehee in New Jersey.  :mail:

I don't know if I'd consider the Jersey Shore 'shining' except from too much tanning oil :teehee
