need new 4' light system - advice/suggestions welcome

Recommended Posts

hello,

my tank is in need of a new light system. when i first purchased 5 years ago, the big thing was with long tube globes (yes, i really know nothing :rofl )

the actual fixture has now broken and hardly working efficiently. so it's time to buy a brand new unit.

i don't want anything too bright, but i want to maintain the good health of my plants. i have anubias on driftwood.

3 piglets bask in it's shining glory for about 16 hours a day.

any suggestions? links are very welcome.

i have never had LED lights before, but i will be honest with you, the tube lights i have had in the past, i really enjoyed and currently enjoy having. but please share with me what is best as a quick ebay search had me feeling queasy with too many options.

Here are a few of what you can get here, Helen. :)

LEDs are a good choice, although you get what you pay for and colour rendition is a bit more white than a fluorescent tube. This fixture, for example, is pretty cheap and rather nice (I have a smaller model), but the actual diodes, colouration, programmability, construction, etc aren't that great in comparison to $500+ LED units.

T5s are cheaper to buy, but then you have higher running costs. Something like this would be good. They also make a 4 bulb version, which would be overkill for you, but you can always leave two bulbs turned off (or only put 2 bulbs in the fixture).

The other option (probably the best) would be to have a light custom built by MakemyLED. You can configure the build yourself, but it would probably be easier just to contact them and ask for help/tell them what it's for.

I'm not sure if you can get deep blue brand in Aus but I love mine :) I'll get the exact for you when I get home. It's a T-5 with a 6,700k bulb and a 10,000k bulb as well as led moonlights. Each bulb can be turned on separately from switches in the back.

My anubias and java fern grow great under both. The Current USA comes with a remote to change colors and dim and there are programmed weather effects in it also.

Hmm, I may have to get this.  Every time I'm in AQA, they are out of (and maybe don't carry anymore) the 48 inch deep blue.  Plus, the price on ken's is really amazing.

I've been looking at that eBay light but the RGB version. Sounds like if you have 4 you're pretty happy with them. Anything negative about them? How long have you had them?

I like them alot. I have had no problems with them at all. The oldest one I have is over 2 years, the others probably just over a year. I really have nothing negative to say about them.

Finnex Stingray LEDs are good for low tech set-up such as yours. I think they are on eBay in Australia. Great ratings for this product on Amazon.com US.

I got my dad the same one for his 90 gallon.

It is unbeatable for the price.  Very slim and no dark spots in the tank.

I got lucky on eBay and got one of these.

I couldn't believe I got it for under $40 usd shipped to my USA parcel service address.  The timer is awesome for when I go away.

A huge plus for me with led's is that they use a lot less power and they do not get hot.  I don't even find that they heat up the water in the summer months.  Super efficient.

I second finnex stingrays. I bought my first finnex fixture for my 40B, a planted + 24/7 and i love it. The stingrays get great reviews on TPT and i would choose that for my next tank.
