New Shukin from Rain Garden

Recommended Posts

Phoenix (alter ego "Shuki") requested some decor, so I went with a minimal design :rofl

AHHHHHHHHHH, both plants are floating and there are scales all over the tank this morning  :tantrum

I'm going to give this fish a spanking :wa

Maybe I didn't let the glue cure long enough or maybe he caught himself on the low filter intakes   :hmm

Plants re-glued and intake extensions removed.

Yeah, he is crazy...zooming around and running into things.  I think it was the low intake extensions.  I took them off and woke up to no new missing scales, although one of the plants was floating :bat:

Is there a difference between a Shukin and a Phoenix goldfish? They do look a lot alike :)

Very beautiful fish. Very unique.

Many people use both names for the same fish.  I believe the original Phoenix had little or no head growth.  The Shukins recreated after WWII are a little different and breeders now seem to be going for shorter bodies and more head growth.  Many of them just look like long-finned Ranchus or Lionheads.  I like the original look better which is what attracted me to this fish.

I also wonder if the Phoenix names refers to the fact that this fish went extinct due to the events of WWII and then "rose from the ashes" so to speak :idont

I would love to see one, but there arent many breeders of the Egg fish. :(

He is a nut!  He had both plants floating again yesterday, so I glued AND tied them down this time.  Thankfully, we haven't lost any more scales.  I think it was the low intake tubes.

So, apparently the Phoenix is a long-finned eggfish of Chinese decent.  I think the Shukin is the Japanese version, but I have yet to clarify this.

He may not necessarily be a plant EATER. My Boo Boo fish just ENJOYS uprooting plants. She only EATS the wisteria, the other plants she just enjoys tearing into bits and playing with. I've also caught little Abanayabar following Boo Boo around and snatching at plants along with her. Naughty, naughty fish! Little Rhonda is so well behaved, doesn't snatch plants at all!

If I could get some I'd seriously think about doing a real breading program with them. They are beautiful fish.

Hey I want to see more pics of this RG fish.

I'm really seriously considering this...

That's one reason I wanted that female when I bought this one.  But, she was sold right before I could get her :(

Apparently, they're difficult to breed and they don't yield many Shukins.

If you guys are able to secure a breeding pair of Phoenix or Shunkin, you guys should definitely document the breeding process for us here.  I'd be so interested to learn.  I've read some of what Cynthia has written about breeding genetics, and % of colors of the batch of fry based on the parents.  I'd be so interested to learn the % of shunkins or phoenix produced for each batch.  it's so interesting!!!
