So I thought I would pop in and check out another local fish store today. Oh my, it was absolutely shocking. Half the fish were floating arkwardly. Lots flashing, underweight. They just looked terrible. I was looking at the Orandas which were just fantails.

Yes! That is exactly what I came out of the shop thinking. I don't know what it is like where you are but in the UK, goldfish standards are really low. Everyone is either into Marine or cichlids. People who keep proper goldfish are few and far between. I have often thought about starting a mail order fish farm. Like Orandas, Ryukin and Ranchu etc.

It's crazy. Goldfish and Koi are virtually the same fish. But Koi are treated like royalty!

Some are but a lot of stores treat them about the same as goldfish and are in poor condition. Most you see at pet smart and such are already stunted.

My LFS has a tank with orandas, ranchus, and recently pearl scales, all labeled "oriental goldfish..." On their Facebook page the actually listed all of them, so when I went to look at the pearlscales I saw them as "oriental" none of them looked right all had clamped fins. I was so disappointed. I've never seen pearl scales in my area before, (Except a koi and goldfish show) so I was really excited. Then I saw their condition. :(

Colley614, I've emailed to star fisheries several times in preparation on getting fish from them after move is done, and they're very friendly, helpful and polite. They're very prepared to help customers out even with more "special" reguests (they gave me more info than I was even initially asking for about their fish, which is good in my opinion).

I'm sure you could email them and ask about breeding quality pairs.

That's how you know it is a good supplier. When they give good advice. I asked a few questions before but didn't get an answer. I will be using star from now on. Do they import them?

I asked about it earlier and they said some of the fish (sorry, can't remember what types and can't access my email right now) are imported, others come from UK breeders.

Well, I'm sorry you missed this.   Look around the website.  Many fine goldfish are bred in the UK.  These don't get sent to pet stores to sale, you have to contact the breeders.

I don't recommend Asian imports, unless from a known breeder of quality fish.   They may be pretty but they may be carrying diseases that can wipe out all of your fish.

Everyone look at the goldfish on the Bristol site, particularly the "Oriental twintail" which gives an explanation for all the confusion about whether a fish is a fantail or ryukin.  Most pet store fancy goldfish are imported form Asia.

Star do have a pretty good reputation and I believe they're having an open day mid October. Other good choices in the UK are London Ranchu (deal in quality fancies, not just ranchu) and Funky Fish who I know personally breed quite a few of their own fancies. They can both be found on Facebook and do deliveries. It's almost been a year since I decided to start in this hobby and I still have no fish, mostly because i've decided to save for more expensive fish and the travel expense to go and view them before purchase because the quality and health of fish in my LFSs is so poor :(

It is such as shame that goldfish get treated so poorly. In most of the stores by mine you get a couple of marine fish in 100 litre tanks, about 25 Gallons US and they get K1 as filtration and filter socks, usually. You go out into the pond section and there are usually 10 Tosai Koi in 500 litre vats, with massive all in one filter systems and uv. But you get 10 medium sized Goldfish in a 50 litre tank that are the same size as the Tosai Koi and all they get is an under gravel filter.

Shakaho,That's an interesting read. The breeders log especially.

Millie, Thank you for your post, it turns out that Ranchu London sell Medigold. I shall be ordering that for my quarantine procedure from now on!

At my LFS we have two systems, a tropical and goldfish/chiclid/feeder fish system. The tropical system gets a weekly water change and the goldfish gets a water change 2-3 times a week. If they are sick we treat directly into the tank for the amount of water in total if they aren't terribly sick. If they are, we pull them (any fish in that case) and put them in our sick tank.

Wow, that sounds like an impressive set up. I'd love to see that in action.

As I say, the LFS I use is fantailtastic! He has loads of seperate tanks that run through a few different sumps. He also has a quarutine system in place. I've also seen him import goldfish the size of a coconut. But he only sells commons and fantails. Occasionally he will bring in something else.

I would love a quarantine set up but we don't have any room. I wish I had pictures of it before we downsized sue to the economy. It used to be two stores but now it's just one. We had a neutral pH community system, and then a higher pH community/chiclid system, a goldfish/feeder system, a salt water system, and then a small reef system. Now it's just the two :/

I'll get a video of them possibly today or Saturday.

We usually have socks on the white pvc but they were being cleaned when I took the picture. This is an old picture from earlier this year haha. The smaller one is the goldfish system.

I would order from you!!!!! Also about your starfishes comments, I have ordered from them in the past, one thing I would say is, if you can go in person I would. They are in Surrey. So depends where you live.
