Regular Member goldfishgirl82 Posted May 1, 2015 Regular Member Share Posted May 1, 2015 I am curious about something. I notice for dropsy and certain other conditions that mods often recommend a combination of Kanamycin (Kanaplex) and Metronidazole (Metroplex). I guess what my question would be is does it have to be the Kanaplex and Metroplex combo from that manufacturer or would the Metronidazole that I have from National Fish Pharmacy work just as well: http://store.nationalfishpharm.com/NFP-products-Metronidazole-Powder-59582.Item.html The reason I am asking is I want to know if I should have the other version of Metro on hand just in case of an emergency (I have the Kanaplex). Also, is Neomycin as effective as Kanamycin? I am able to buy that in larger quanity from NFP (NFP no longer sells Kanamycin for some reason). http://store.nationalfishpharm.com/NFP-products-Neomycin-Sulfate-Powder--59583.Item.html. All this is just for my future reference to put certain worries at ease. Thanks.
Regular Member fantailfan1 Posted May 1, 2015 Regular Member Share Posted May 1, 2015 Is metronidazole the only ingredient in that? Neomycin is an older drug with more bacterial resistance.
Regular Member goldfishgirl82 Posted May 1, 2015 Author Regular Member Share Posted May 1, 2015 It is pure metronidazole powder according to the label. So the Neomycin would probably not be as effective?
Regular Member fantailfan1 Posted May 1, 2015 Regular Member Share Posted May 1, 2015 Pure metro is what you want so that should be fine. Neomycin isn't as effective as kanamycin.
Regular Member goldfishgirl82 Posted May 1, 2015 Author Regular Member Share Posted May 1, 2015 (edited) Okay, cool. Thanks for answering my questions. I'm glad I got the Kanamycin when I saw it. I wish NFP still sold it in large quantity though. I'm disappointed that they stopped. Edited May 1, 2015 by goldfishgirl82
