My daughter was given 2 goldfish one has developed white spots on its gills and along the edges if its front fins but the other one hasn't developed them. Does this mean its male as it keeps chasing the other fish around the tank

Welcome to Koko's. :) Yep you may have a male! Pictures will make it easier to tell if the white spots are breeding stars or something else. Just want to make sure for ourselves so you don't get any wrong info ;)

I'm not sure why people are requesting pictures.  If the white dots are only on the gill covers and the front of the pectorals, I can't imagine how they could be anything but breeding stars.  The fact that he is also chasing the female gives further confirmation.  He's all boy.

If the spots were all over his body or if he had other symptoms it would be different.

It's one of those 'just need to be sure' things. ;)

Yes stars are a chive indicator for your fish as male.

In my near past experience female to female chasing observed i think just to force the other female to scatter her eggs for a meal.
