Hi all,

All of my fish were just fine as of last night, but this morning when I woke up, my black Oranda seems to have come down with bad SBD. I found her floating at the top corner of the tank, her usual spot to rest, but she has been on her side and also with her belly up. It is possible I was a little heavy handed with last night's feed of Hikari Lionhead pellets. I just fed everyone peas.

This fish has gotten a little "tippy" before, but after a round of peas she'd always go back to normal. I have never seen it this bad. She likes to come up to the surface and pop air bubbles for fun too, which I'm sure doesn't help but I'm not sure how to stop that behavior, haha. Is there anything else I can do for her? I feel so bad for her, and sad :(

Sorry to hear about your fish.  SBD is :thumbdown

I would suggest fasting for a couple of days followed by a day or two of peas or red leaf lettuce (I prefer this over peas as it really gets my fish moving :o ).

Keep us posted.  :D

Thanks, everyone. She has been improving throughout the day. I just did a 30-40% water change, as when I re-tested for nitrates, the levels looked between 20-40. Earlier I got a very pale orange, and I know the API nitrate test can be tricky, so to be on the safe side I did a change.

My newest addition is prone to SBD as well. I just ordered some gel food to incorporate into their diet to hopefully minimize this problem. Today was the first time I'd actually seen either of them go full-on belly up -- it's kind of scary!

This fish in particular likes to skim the surface, presumably looking for food. I wish there was a way to get her to stop doing that! I've never fed them floating pellets so I have no idea why she does this!
