Hi, the problem I'm having now, I had before, in April. The thread from then can be found here: http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/forum/index.php?/topic/116859-nose-inflamed-and-red/

  • * Nitrate level(Tank) Its Darker than 20 but lighter than 40
  • * Ammonia Level(Tap) 0
  • * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0
  • * Nitrate level(Tap) 0
  • * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 7.6
  • * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 7.6
  • Other Required Info:
  • * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API Drops
  • * Water temperature? 22.3C
  • * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 600 Litres, Running for about 4 Months I think
  • * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? 3 Canister Filters that do about 4,500LPH
  • * How often do you change the water and how much? Every Week - 80-90%
  • * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 4-5 Days ago - 80%
  • * How many fish in the tank and their size? 8 - Between 2-7 Inches

  • * Any new fish added to the tank? No
  • * Any medications added to the tank? No
  • * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. Last Prazi was done about 2 Months ago
  • * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Bamboos "Nose" is inflamed and red, also has some white fuzzy looking stuff on it.
  • Tiny has slight tears in his fins and white marks all over his tail.
  • * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? He is acting normal

Everyone else in the tank seems fine - Except for Tiny who has slight tears and white marks all over his tail that make me think of Flukes, but he went through 5 rounds of Prazi during his 6 week long QT when I bought him home. I noticed the marks on Tiny's tail a couple of days ago but didn't think much of them but they look worse today

I remember last time this happened to Bamboo, it took a long time to go away and not come back. I used 0.3% salt and tri-sulfa and was thinking of doing that again? At the moment Bamboo is in a 60 Litre tub with 0.1% Salt

I'll be doing a water change to get the nitrates down, and also think I'll be removing my gravel and eventually replacing it with sand as I'm remembering how hard gravel is to keep clean and think that may have contributed to the Nitrate spike (fun times ahead!)

I'm getting pictures now

To Recap: Bamboo's nose is inflamed and red. This has happened before. He is now in a 60 litre tub with 0.1% salt.  He is acting normally

Tiny's tail has white marks on it, he is still in the main tank. he is also acting normally.

*sigh* Seems like everything is happening at once!

I think that taking the gravel out was a good choice at least until we get this sorted out.  Make sure the water is pristine and the parameters are perfect.  Watch for pH crashes.  Do you know your tap and tank KH?

I would move Tiny to a QT with just an airstone and be prepared to treat with an antibiotic.  What meds do you have on hand?  I would prefer Furan-2 or Kanaplex to the Triple Sulpha, but I know you have restrictions in Australia regarding antibiotics.

I only have tri sulfa on hand but I can have a look for the others. I don't know the KH either but I can pick up a kit tomorrow. I will set up the QT again for Tiny as well, I've moved Bamboo back to the main tank since he is looking normal again but keeping an eye on him.

I've also decided not to put Sand in, so it will be bare bottom with glass stones.

Tiny is still really active and eating well. his fins just look terrible.

Let's go ahead and get Tiny into the QT and started on the Triple Sulfa.  Don't add any salt for now.  In the mean time, see if you have any access to Furan-2 or Kanaplex in case the Triple Sulfa fails.

Thanks, Tiny is in QT with the trisulfa now. The white stuff is spreading onto his body :( I can't get a good picture of it though since he is also white x.x I do have some new pictures though, he has red streaks in his tail now too

i think that Tiny may be pineconing :( could you post a top view photo, please?

Or is it the white stuff spreading onto him?  :idont

I see what you mean, I'm pretty sure it's the white stuff that's spreading on him but it IS hard to tell

Yep, he doesn't look pineconed to me.  :D

Now hopefully that trisulfa will kick in.

Thanks Lisa :D He is super active right now, he started swimming really erratically when I went to check on him just now. Hopefully he will start looking better soon

Update on Tiny:

MOST of the white stuff is gone, but there is still some, especially on his tail. His tail also still looks very torn up/ratty. Getting photos to put up now.

I bought a GH/KH Test Kit, I've just tested my main tank so far, not sure if I'm understanding the results properly but...

the KH took 4 drops to change colour, so 50-100?

and the GH took 6 Drops to change colour, so also 50-100?

I think it's looking better.  :D

How long has he been in the tri sulfa?  about a week?

Your KH and GH are both decent.  I wouldn't mind seeing your KH a bit higher but I'm not so sure I'd mess with it to be honest . . . .

Hi, sorry for the delayed reply, I saw your post on my phone and kept forgetting to post once I got on my computer (I hate typing on my phone :P)

Anyway, 10 days in the tri sulfa so far.

More white stuff seems to be appearing on him today, and I'm not sure if I'm just seeing things or if it's more of that white stuff, but I think some of his scales are looking prickly :( It's hard to get what I'm seeing in photos, but I tried.

I've just done his water change for today but haven't added anything in except for the prime so far incase the plan changed

Dose the Triple Sulfa again (immediately) and if you are sure the scales are pineconing, add 1/4 Teaspoon of dissolved Epsom Salt (plain Magnesium Sulfate) per 10 gallons of water.

Re-added the Tri Sulfa. I'm not 100% sure on the scales, I'm finding it very hard to tell since he still has this white stuff on him and it blends in with his scales
